Does your baby wake up happy?

I hear tales of babies waking up in their cots babbling to themselves, laughing etc.

DS is nearly 9 months and always wakes up crying. Always. Even if he's sleeping with me/on me. He goes from deep sleep to sobbing/screaming. He's not a good sleeper but goes down ok. Yet at every wake up he's sooo upset.

Should I be worried?

DS wakes up with a stretch and a big grin every day. DD did the blood-curdling shriek mentioned by a PP. i can't remember when it stopped: some time between 12-15 months I think. Now she's usually chats happily, or shouts "muuuum, I'm awake! Come and snuggle me!"

DS is nearly 6 months old and has always woken up happy. Just recently he has woken up having a little giggle! If he wakes up cranky it's because he is either due/gone over a feed or he needs more sleep

DC1 would happily lie in her Moses basket staring at the mobile, lie in her cot babbling at her mobile & then at her teddies or "reading" her books. DH & I used to lie in bed listening to her on the baby monitor & decide if we could keep leaving her to it (she used to wake at 6am but would usually be happy by herself for at least 45 minutes).
DS has never been happy by himself. I think he regrets that he ever left the womb! A complete Velcro baby and toddler and, at the age of almost 5, just doesn't like being by himself. And is NOT a morning person. Even now, he staggers through to our room bleary eyed having clearly only woken up seconds beforehand. He's not crying but he would if he had to stay in his room.
I'm not sure if DC2 has ever learned to self settle. He didn't sleep through until he was 3yr8mo. We tried controlled crying every 6-8mth from about 18mths but it was just miserable as he was inconsolable as soon as we left the room. He would start the night in his cot & wasn't too bad at going to sleep provided we were in the room until he was asleep but, as soon as he woke, he'd come in with us. For a good year from his second birthday, the routine which meant we all got the maximum amount of sleep was for one of us to sit in his room whilst he went to sleep, whoever heard him first stir go & get him & bring him into our bed at which point he would climb on top of me, stretch out along my chest, tummy & upper legs and fall asleep. Luckily, I can sleep on my back!
