My toddler hates going in the buggy, any tips?

I'm panicking a bit as due my 2nd any day now and getting my 18m old in her buggy is getting harder and harder. Once she's in she's generally fine and I always warn her she's going in there but unless I can offer her a biscuit or something it's like a wrestling match. I'm worried about having the baby in the sling and trying to get the toddler in the buggy. Agh! Did anyone else's toddler grow out of this? It's been a few months now!

My toddler believes that raisins are only ever eaten while sitting in a buggy, I say if bribery works then go with it.

Ok that makes me feel a bit better thank you Grin

I have a 2 yr old who hates the buggy but sometimes it just has to happen. I am a total fan of snacks in the buggy or even an iPhone with peppa on it if needed.

Have you thought about putting the toddler in the sling and baby in the buggy?

zaws · 07/05/2017 08:22

I probably will sometimes heir but worried about suddenly needing to bf the baby in the early days!

Ds didn't use a buggy from 9 months when he started to walk. Apart from when he got tired. I used reins with an extendable dog lead and a buggy board.

zaws · 07/05/2017 08:32

She just sits down if i try and use reins Wine

Do you let her take toys in the buggy? DD gets to choose a toy to take with her - we have to go out every day with dogs and she doesn't really enjoy it.
So she takes a few toys and sometimes gets out to walk and wants to push them, and sometimes has her snack whilst in the pram.

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 07/05/2017 08:36

Just use bribery. It's a godsend :)

I have a just turned 2 year old and a 4.5 month old and went through the same drama although it was quite short lived.

With my toddler I give her the choice of walking next to the buggy or sitting in it. She usually walks for a few minutes then gets in voluntarily. I also let her climb into the buggy which I hyped up as a super exciting thing to do.

I also have a buggy snack as a back up. heycat my toddler believes that grapes are only ever eaten in a buggy!

I saw the title of this thread and my immediate thought was: biscuits?

How about a ride-on buggyboard - the one that has an attachable seat like a bike seat? Baby can go in buggy, toddler on buggyboard seat. Before baby arrives you can strap nappy bag into buggy seat so toddler can ride on the buggyboard seat. It means toddler can stand and ride or sit and ride but doesn't have to be wrestled into buggy. You'd still need reins to stop climbing off an wandering though

Something like one of these

My dd was the same, I used to just let her walk but take the buggy for when she got tired, but when I really needed her in the buggy it was bribery all the way Grin

Well yes this is my main technique at the moment Grin, I guess I was just a bit concerned about bargaining with biscuits so much, I don't drive so use the buggy a lot so she can go in and out a few times a day!
She loves her fruit but it doesn't cut it as a bribe with her Blush.

Toys are a good idea! I will try that tomorrow I think, or books maybe.

Sling and buggy is a nightmare , been there done that and failed

6 weeks in I bought a Out n about 360 nipper double buggy and it was like a gift from the gods lol

That was with a 2 year old and baby

Now 9 months in and use it all the time it's fantastic

Daytona79 · 08/05/2017 14:22

Oh did the buggy board too and you try keeping a 2 year old on one when the refuse

Bought a sit on one too, that strapped him in and he tipped it and the buggy over mid trantrum

Buggy board only good once child fully cooperates and sit on one ok for short journey but no use if child gets tired etc also it's a pain to push buggy with it attached

2littlemoos · 20/05/2017 17:16

My DD went through a phase of this. I now say "we can't go to X until you are in the pushchair" and "mummy has to walk really realllly fast!" I can't remember what age it started but it was definitely before 2. Maybe try that if you think your DC will understand. Good luck!

Crumbs1 · 20/05/2017 17:19

Brute force and we'll fitting harness.

Chattycat78 · 20/05/2017 19:24

Same issue here with 2 (and a quarter) year old. He can walk fine but you can't trust him not to wander off. Got a buggy board but it's a nightmare to push pram with him on it (have a double buggy and also have an almost 1 year old). He also keeps getting off the buggy board and wants to walk, which means it takes years to get anywhere and I struggle if he tries to run off as im trying to push a pram at the same time...!

I haven't found a magic solution other than food either for getting him in the pram! It's a difficult age.

I also went through a using sling and buggy phase and it was very tough trying to push a pram with a heavy toddler in it also with a sling on.

I see someone has also suggested putting the toddler in a sling. My toddler weighs over 2 and a half stone so there's no way I could do that!

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 20/05/2017 19:28

My DD has just learned how to climb into the buggy herself. Game changer for us.

Etak15 · 20/05/2017 19:29

I coudn't walk far with a baby in a sling never mind a toddler! I would agree with pp's of bribes - quavers last quite a long time 😉
And maybe consider a double buggy? I found it a lot easier even though I really didn't want to get one at first!!
