7mo constantly constipated!! Help!!

Advice please!
My daughter is 7 months always constipated, she drinks cow and gate baby milk and has been weaning for a while so has 2 meals a day.
She has always suffered from this, and it's awful because I have watched her poo and it is pure rock! She screams and cries in agony no matter how much I try to help.
I have a laxative (suitable for babies) that I have given her before to help, but it's at a point where this happens every single week and I'm very sure it's not normal. What can I do to help? Should I change her milk?
I plan on calling the health visitor on Monday but she's constipated again now so until then here is my only lifeline.
Thanks x

See if you can get her to drink some fresh orange juice. Or try her with prune juice.
I used to get movicol from my gp for my DD, she was always constipated up until around 2.

My DS2 was horribly constipated at that age. Only laxatives would help. Another mum suggested cutting out dairy from his and my diet (breastfeeding) and within 3 days he was going daily and no longer solid and painful to pass.
Definitely speak to your GP and/or health visitor about trialling different milk.
Hope that helps

Also, DD would always do a massive poo after baby massage classes. If there are no classes available near you your HV should be able to show you some tummy strokes to try to help x

Thanks everyone, I will try the juices and look at the massages, I didn't want to keep giving her laxatives cus she's a baby! Doesn't feel right to give her so much medicine, but it's the only thing that helps and I can't leave her in pain! Hopefully the other ideas help too x

Is Cow & Gate high in iron? Iron will absolutely constipate them, and my very, very experience nanny told me she sees it all the time in babies with high-iron formula. Have you tried switching? And go for high fiber foods.

There's a possibility that her bowel has stretched from doing big poos and it needs the chance to recover to stop the vicious cycle. I'd keep going with the laxatives daily (or natural laxatives - fruit and veg beginning with p) but I'd also not let her go more than 2 days without a poo for a few weeks. Use glycerin suppositories (available over the counter in a child dose - you'll probably only need one cut in half) to ensure she poos every few days. I'd keep experimenting with diet until you can stop the suppositories

Prune purée always worked wonders for DD2. Just buy some dried prunes, stew them in a little bit of water until soft then blend. You can also mix it with some other fruit purée if your baby doesn't like the taste.

If it's any consolation, mine grew out of it after a few months. I think their tummies sometimes just need a bit of time to adapt to solids.

Lots of water with a little bit of pure juice in it either orange or prune. My sister is a reflexologist and baby reflexology really helps. Baby massage on the tummy also helps.

If she's blw try blueberries, or blueberry purée. They always get my daughter going!!

Prunes Prunes and more Prunes. Ella's kitchen do a Prunes fruit pouch it's a purple one I think but says Prunes on it. I used to give a pouch or two of this and it always worked for us.

We had this exact issue with our DD. My advice would be don't leave it too long trying natural solutions, as it can cause serious problems like anal fissures. It took us 3 months to get her onto Movicol, which is a kind of stool softening powder you add to milk, and it changed our and her lives. She now poos daily and easily, but if we forget it or try to stop it she goes right back to rock hard grey poo, screaming and changes into a different baby. The doctor advised us she's probably got a psychological issue around pooing now and it's so important to keep treating her with movicol (it's entirely safe and has no side effects or build up), possibly throughout her childhood. Lots of children are on maintenance doses for constipation with no ill effects.

Hopefully your DD will sort it out on her own but just wanted to share my experience as we were at our wits end with constipation and this has sorted it. See what your doctor think.

Weetabix, fresh orange segments, prune or apricot puree. Plenty of fresh veg/fruit and fibre in diet every day and water with every meal. There's no harm in giving lactulose once a day whatsoever. It is quite a common problem especially when first weaning as the bowel is getting used to a lot of new things.

BlankSpace1 · 08/05/2017 04:45

Thanks so much for the suggestions everyone! I will definitely try them all x

Avoid bananas too - they can create a bit of a blockage

boopdoop · 09/05/2017 23:59

We had similar issues with my DS though he was a few months older. We were recommended probiotics, and one course of them and it if completely sorted the issue. Just 2-3 drops in his milk once a day, and within a couple of weeks we started to drop the lactulose and after 5-6 weeks we never had a problem again. That was 18 months ago now. We used this one: www.biogaia.co.uk/product/biogaia-protectis-drops/

Hope you get it sorted as it's so horrible to see them suffering isn't it.

Gillian1980 · 10/05/2017 08:38

Dd has always suffered from constipation - her poos are so rock hard.

We give her Ella's prunes daily with breakfast and a diluted orange juice every couple of days.

It's definitely worse when she eats bananas which is a shame as she loves them and asks for them often.

And plenty of fluids too.
