Buying swing to help baby nap?

DD2 is 4.5 months and going to break me! She will generally only nap for 30 minutes at a time and fights every nap even if I put her down in good time. I spend my whole day trying to get her to sleep so she's not chronically overtired. If I'm at home I usually put her in the carrier as I have a toddler to chase after as well. I'm physically exhausted by it though as she's having 6-8 naps a day which involve me bouncing around with her in the sling whilst picking up after my toddler.

I'm tempted to buy some kind of vibrating swing in the hope this will put her to sleep for some naps without my constant attention. I do have a Baby Björn bouncer but I can't constantly bounce her to sleep in it with a 2 year old to chase.

Had anybody else used one with a sleep resisting baby!? I'm getting desperate!

Watching with interest. I just posted a similar question in sleep.

I'll keep an eye on that too - I hadn't seen it! I thought there might be more traffic here!

How is her sleep at night? I ask because this could have been me except my my baby was waking every 2 hours over night too and I was exhausted.

We did some sleep/weaning training and a she is now sleeping through the night and napping well during the day.

I don't have a swing but I put my 6mo in her pushchair (fully reclined)in the hallway and push her back and forth whilst my toddler watches TV or plays. Once she's asleep I can stop pushing and do something with my toddler or housework etc... She wakes up crying every ten minutes or so and I have to literally run to the pushchair before she wakes up too much and push it back and forth again and she'll often go back to sleep. So I can stretch out her nap to an hour or so doing this. Don't know if that will help but it's what works for me!

lizard she's waking every 2 hours at night as well!

pipnchops I'm not sure if that will work as she tends to wake up in the pram once I stop pushing her!

My DS had silent reflux as a baby and cried a lot. We had one of those electric swings that was meant to be used when baby could sit by itself but from early days I would wedge him in so he couldn't slip down and put it on high. It was the only time he was happy and he would nap too and was a lifesaver for the first few months.

Personally we spent a fortune on one...and it was used a couple of times as she hated it! What you need is one of these Grin

Brilliant idea!

Pixie2015 · 05/05/2017 21:57

Mine will only sleep when out in pushchair or when in baby carrier - watching out for any good advise 🙄

As with user above.

We inherited a swing when DD was a baby. It said the fast setting wasn't to be used for babies under 6mo but we ignored. DD loved it and slept soundly. The only other way to get her to sleep was go for a drive which wasn't always practical.

DD is 17 now, didn't do her any harm. I loved that swing! Good luck!!

minipie · 05/05/2017 22:50

Your baby sounds like mine. I bought a swing, she hated it. Buggy (without stopping) was the only thing that worked. Sorry

Have you got a Sleepyhead? I had one for my second dc and wished I'd had one for dd

skankingpiglet · 05/05/2017 23:58

DD1 was a non-napping, waking every two hours at night horror story. She would only nap in our arms or the car seat. A friend lent us a swing when she was nearing 3mo and it revolutionised our lives! She still took ridiculously short naps but at least I had my arms free for those 20 mins. It's amazing what you can get done in such a short space of time! We also used to have it set to 'high'. We eventually cajoled her into trying her cot for naps around 9mo but it was invaluable in those 6 intervening months.

Thankfully DD2, although not without problems, has been much less of a PITA sleep-wise so I haven't needed to borrow it again.

chloechloe · 06/05/2017 13:51

I've seen the Ford cot on TV twinkle! Shame it's a one off!

I have a Sleepyhead minipie - she's swaddled in a Sleepyhead in a Snuzpod and still doesn't sleep long😀

Any recommendations for which swing to buy - from the replies I think i need one I can crank up to maximum! Grin

Are you feeding to sleep?

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 06/05/2017 14:02

I bought a Mothercare swing when DS was about the same age. First time in it he slept for an hour, could have cried with gratitude.

Tried it on DD, she detested it. Screamed the house down.

So, if you can, test before you buy! Do any friends have them?

chloechloe · 06/05/2017 19:20

No I don't feed to sleep lapinrose except for night feeds.

It's a bit of a risky buy given how expensive they are and I don't know anybody who has one. I guess if I unpack it carefully I can send it back if she doesn't like it. I remember when I bought Ewan the Dream Sheep for DD1 (another power napper) she hated it so much she tried to kick him in the head!

My son is only 9 weeks old but was a bit of a Velcro baby until recently. We bought him a swing from Mothercare after realising he liked being rocked back and forth (in the carseat but didn't want him in it for extended periods of time. He loves it. I can put him in it for ages and now can even eat my lunch with both hands! To nap, I swaddle him then put him in the swing and he'll easily sleep for about an hour. Only thing is, he likes it on the highest setting so if the timer finishes or I attempt to lower the speed of rocking, he'll whinge/grumble until its back up to the highest Hmm Grin
