Should you change a nappy at night if only wet?

Hi, I have at 19day old baby. Having real issues going down later in the evening. Trying to tackle this with my husband the Health Visitor just now as last few night he's been breaking his heart crying for hours but being fed and winded. Maybe silent reflux or colic.

Through the night he seems much more at ease when I feed him his bottle and a lot of the time falls into a deep sleep. I then change his nappy but this can bring him out the sleep. I remember sometime ago a friend mentioning only change the nappy in the night if it's a Poo! Would you say this is correct?

I normally change every time just now but I just want to do what keeps him more settled and the easiest to drift off again as it's so difficult earlier in the evening so any help through the night is a bonus. Iv been so emotional with it all! Help!

I would def only change nappy if a poo overnight! Especially if your baby falls asleep on the bottle! Feed him, attempt to burp him, put him down. Then pray! Good luck

Yes, only change if a poo at night. The nappies are so absorbant now that you don't need to. I used to do a change at the 5am feed as by that time nappy was huge but know lot's of people who managed to get through till morning. Now 7 months and we do 9pm till 7am in same nappy provided no poo.

And congrats on your new baby!

Unless he gets terrible nappy rash, you should be fine with leaving it until the next feed

If he settles after a feed and hasn't pooed the yes. My DD had awful colic and once we got it under control I was changing her bum out of the habit of "let's make sure every possible thing that could be causing you discomfort is seen too" and once I stopped changing her nappy unnecessarily, that coupled with the treatment of her colic allowed me around four hour stretches of sleep.

Baby will let you know if they are uncomfortable and we've found both Aldi nappies and pampers can hold wee in overnight. We do 9pm to 7am without a nappy change.

Why don't you change him before feeding rather than after?
