Too early to start potty training?

DS is 16.5 months. Just recently he's been coming up to us saying "poo, poo" when, well, when he's done a poo.
DH is talking about getting DS's potty out and starting training.
I'm wondering if it's still a bit too early?

dd2 stopped wearing any day or night nappies at 16 months withiout any training so you could see what happened..it is very early though

personally i think this is too early. I have just started training my ds who is 2.4, the only reason I started was because he was removing his nappy and pulling down his trousers when he needed a wee. I think unless he is physically capable of pulling down pants and trousers and capable of understanding you when you ask him if he needs a wee, or can tell you before he needs to go, then i would wait, there's no rush. Just get the potty out for him to try maybe before gets in the bath, to see how that goes

That's what I thought (ner ner ner ner nerrrrr DH). He's only said it 2 or 3 times - and it's obvious he's already done the big sweaty smelly poo.....

Thanks ladies

There's quite a big difference in telling you they've done it & knowing the feeling before it comes tbh.

Not saying you can't potty train a 16mth old, you could give it a go.

My DS started saying poo when he'd already gone at 16months aswell and then by 18months would tell you he's about to go. Didn't start to potty train him though as it seemed to early and he never gives an indication about wanting a wee so didn't see the point until he recognises that he needs both IYSWIM
