Not much help but can you call your health visitor first thing and see what they say? Or see if you can speak to your GP over the phone? I found with a baby they are always very good at calling back. If you are concerned it is worth a call. Hope all is ok.

How fast - count how many breaths they take in 60 seconds.

Any other worrying symptoms? Drawing in of the skin at the throat or underneath the ribcage? Drawing in of skinninbetween the ribs? Is baby feeding ok? Alert?

If it looks like 'see saw' breathing please go straight to A&E! If not, an emergency gp appointment for today definitely

Is this a change, or has baby always breathed like this?

If it's a change, GET MEDICAL HELP NOW

If baby's always been like this, talk to your midwife/ health visitor.

DancingLedge · 04/05/2017 09:19

In fact, at this age, if you have any doubts about your baby's health, get medical advice. Within hours.
If this is a change in breathing, you need to see a Dr promptly, or get to and E.

No one will ever mind checking out a small baby.

Fast breathing can be sign of an infection so I would get your baby checked out if I were you to be on the safe side.

When are you next seeing a health professional?

My ds2 had fast breathing (upwards of 90 breaths a minute IIRC) aged 3 weeks. No other symptoms, was otherwise happy, no fever, O2 sats fine. An X-ray showed a possible shadow on his lung, but they weren't sure. They still didn't take any chances and admitted him for 3 days of IV antibiotics. He was fine - wellest baby on the ward - and we'll never know what was up, but they confirmed when I took him in that it wasn't normal, and with such a tiny baby it is much much better to be seen unnecessarily and reassured than not seen when something is the matter. I think I'd be doing A&E in your scenario, or returning to the post-natal ward. Good luck, hope all is well.
