Pretty sure there are no rules.

There are 4 years between my DD and my DS. I like the gap as my DD can do so much herself-dress herself, feed, use toilet and entertain herself-whilst I feed baby/put him down for naps etc. Must be harder when DC 1 is much younger

Pros and cons to whatever age gap. Having two close together gets the hardest bits out of the way earlier and they can play nicely (or fight!!) and be interested in similar things.
Slightly bigger age gaps can be nice and sometimes is a must for parents that are paying child care. Some families can't afford two lots of full time childcare at the same time so have to wait for one to go to school. But then the children aren't always interested in the same things (although some might!)
Bigger age gaps (like mine - 9 years different) is good from the prospect that DS1 is really helpful with his baby brother, he helps rock him to sleep, to feed etc. Shock for me and DH as we seem to have forgotten what to do with a baby!!! We're having to learn everything again!!

Someone once told me there is no right or wrong time for a baby. They'll always be positives and negatives for having one straight away or leaving it for a bit.

Never a right/perfect age gap. I've come to the conclusion that what suits one family's needs mightn't suit another.
I wouldn't have liked 2 close together & being worn out/tired constantly, but out of all the mums I know I'm the 'odd one out' as they all have 2 close together!
Do what suits you and your family :)
