My little one is five days old today I had planned to breastfeed but has not worked out as of yet, plus midwives so pushy, anyway I have some aptamil first milk and she has been feeding well I have been waking her up every 2-3 hours to feed as she not giving us cues, and she is taking about 1.5-2.5fl oz each time, I have supplemented this not at every feed but most with 0.7ml colostrum milk but it's so sore it's not every feed. Her best was just over 2fl oz she has got rid of black tar nappies and they now colmans mustard lol

Congratulations on your new baby Thanks

Do you want to continue Bfing?

If you can try to keep breastfeeding until your milk comes in, I found DS struggled to get the colostrum but was much better when the milk was there. We supplemented too in first week as I wasn't convinced he was feeding effectively. I found I got so much mixed advice from the midwives. Do what you feel is best. I couldn't even imagine being about to continue feeding DS myself and nearly stopped so many times, but 15 weeks down the line now and I love feeding him and it's working for us.

There's loads of support in here, if you look under 'feed the world' and then 'infant feeding'.

When is your next midwife or HV visit? If her weight gain is ok and she seems well the she'll be getting enough milk.

If breastfeeding is very sore, have you had her checked for tongue tie? You could also try using nipple shields as that can help to protect your nipples until they heal. If you want to continue with some/all breastfeeding you'll need to be expressing regularly if she's not feeding directly yet.

Yes she has only lost 100g of her body weight so not alot considering they can loose up to 10%, I am thinking I am going to express so I know how much I am giving her and how much she is getting any advice on how long and how I can store and keep breast milk

The website "Kellymom" has lots of useful advice about breastfeeding and expressing. Here is their guide about storing breast milk:

kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/milkstorage/milkstorage/

Expressing long term is hard work, as its kind of the worst of all worlds. It can be really useful in the short term whilst you're solving breastfeeding problems or healing.

If the weigh gain is ok, I'd really advise not worrying about the exact quantities she's having, as it can become a bit of an unhelpful obsession.

One of the downsides of bf is not knowing how much their taking. The amounts aren't comparable with formula, and the amounts they take vary dependant on how hungry they are or if they want a snack. You know by their weight and also if producing enough wet and dirty nappies. You can pump and feed baby this way but that's really hard work. Stick with bf if you can, lansinoh nipple cream was a life saver in the early days. Try and go with it if you can, don't stress over how much she's taking- trust mother nature!

If you know new mums who are purely bottle feeding, try not to compare too much. I found it so disheartening that their babies went longer between feeds and at night. It settles out as they get older.

Kelly mom is really helpful and guides you through this!

Hi, I don't usually post on here but have just started a new thread and saw this so had to reply....my son (now 5) was a nightmare with feeding, I bottle fed him (he didn't latch on to breast) and he only ever used to drink around 2oz every 3-4 hrs! I obsessed over this so much I was so stressed and ended up in a right state about it but he had always gained weight at every weighing and my amazing health visitor told me that some babies can thrive on very little milk and my son was just one of these. She said he may be one that prefers food and advised me to wean at 5 months but he was terrible at that too lol! Oh the memories!! But again he always gained. So I'd say if the weight is fine then try not to worry (very hard I know) just carry on as u are and ur baby will take as much as they need, also don't worry if anyone says to u 'oh that's not enough' or 'my baby drinks much more than that' etc as u can never compare two babies, everyone is different!
