Dog bite!

Hello we have a 22mth old girl and a little boy due in Sept. Had our dog 10 years now he's a large Siberian Husky. I'm always careful of him around my little girl but generally he's very gentle and they get on great.
The other night DH was putting her to bed and I was cleaning downstairs he stole one of her toys. When I took it from him he bit me! Broke the skin on my finger I had to go to hospital for stitches! It happened so fast I think he did it intentionally but would like to think it was a moment of madness.
I love him so much but is it too much of a risk to keep him with young children. In 10 years he's never done this before so I think is he allowed one mistake??

You might be better posting in the dog section or asking your vet.

You shouldn't ever take something off a dog. You should have offered him something else like a treat or one of his toys for a swap.

You need to ensure that everyone in the house inc dc stick to this rule.

You know your dog and from you said I would keep him. If I was confident I could supervise the kids at all times around him until they were a lot, lot older.

I would also take him to the vet for a check. At 10yo he's getting on a bit, he could be in pain. If he's got a bad tooth or something he might have snapped out of pain? Did he growl? Did he bite and hang on or let go straight away?

Is he ever left alone with your little girl, even for a second?

Was he trying to keep hold of the toy or trying to actually get you?
My rottweiler caught my little finger as I pulled a toy off her and locked on it!!
Pain!!!
But it was her knee jerk reaction to keep the toy. .

I would be VERY careful with the dog around your children. Elderly dogs can have a marked change in personality. They can be in pain from joint issues, etc, which can cause them to lash out in a way they never did when they were younger. You might want to consider consulting with a vet. A friend of mine had to put her elderly dog to sleep because of this issue. Her dog started growling and snapping at her kids out of the blue and it got very dangerous.

Sorry... Also, some elderly dogs are very stressed by little children and all of their noise. And the child being face level with the dog makes it worse.
