How to deal with toddlers tired screaming meltdown?

Ds is an unreliable napper. This last few weeks he has sometimes not napped, others he's napped very late. He's just had 40 minutes, woken up and is screaming the place down. Doesn't stop if I cuddle him, play, distract, nothing. Yesterday it went on for an hour. I ended up strapping him in his highchair with a few snacks on his tray and leaving him to calm down..

He seems pretty inconsolable, but I really don't know what to do to help. Hes woken the baby up by screaming in his ear and now they are both screaming. He's a red snotty mess.

This sounds an awful lot like my dd.
unreliable napper to and a screaming mess without one.

Distractions

Tv when it's really bad.
Snacks.
Buggy walk.
A bath.

A bath always seemed to help us.

What happens in the 15 or so minutes before he has his screaming fit?

It's when he wakes up from a nap, too soon. So today, fell asleep in buggy on the way back from the shop having not napped all day. Only had 40 minutes sleep and woke up crying.

time thanks, he fell asleep on the buggy walk and was a screaming mess when he woke. It was very late for a nap and it wasn't a long enough nap.

He doesn't watch telly. Ffs I even offered treat snacks, they got batted away.
