Periodic cries during sleep - any ideas

My DS is 14 months old and has in the past few days been crying out in his sleep intermittently, mostly between the hours of 8pm - 12am. We hear him suddenly cry out but more often than not by the time we get to his bedroom, the cries have stopped. A couple of times I've been in the room and he is doing it in his sleep/almost asleep rather than being awake and crying.

His temperature is fine and whilst he had a bit of nappy rash last week, this has cleared up and doesn't look irritated.

Anyone experience this/have any ideas what it could be? He seems far too young to be having' nightmares' but what do I know?

I think it's just something they do tbh. Don't worry about it! I think it's a bit like talking in your sleep, just something that happens, no need to worry.

Sounds like night terrors. Very common apparently. My DS (17 months) gets them usually when going through a rough teething phase or if ill. Can't do anything about it but feel rest assured that you've witnessed yourself that your DS went back to sleep without needing you to intervene.
Infact intervening can upset your baby more - they're not aware of crying out and so if you interrupt them, you'll wake them up and THEN they get upset! (Been there, done that!)
If the crying is frantic and goes on a while (but he still appears to be asleep) we'll go into DS and gently stroke his back until he's calm again (until I'M calm again!! - It's not a nice thing to hear the poor things!)

Thanks for the reassurance!

My son is 15 months and has been doing the same recently. No help, but it's not just you!

Mine did this, he used to shriek like the world was ending but he was asleep. He is three now and hasn't done it in ages.

Hmm, 5 month old DS has been doing this recently, and he sounds terrified while doing it. The idea that he's having nightmares at this age is just so upsetting. Sad
