Baby friendly cream/oil for really dry skin?

DD is 8 weeks and has developed really dry skin on her body but especially her legs. I use coconut oil in the bath and afterwards on her but it's not really helping. It might be because she's bathed every night which I know can be drying for a baby's skin but she has horrendous colic and finds the bath really soothing and it gives me a bit of peace and breaks up the stressful evenings we have with her. Any ideas for a cream/oil?

Have you tried olive oil? My DS had super dry skin as a new born and it seemed to work a charm for him.

I use aveeno on my baby as she is prone to dry skin. It's suitable for newborns and it's lovely so I steal it for my own legs!! I found while coconut oil doesn't add any moisture, it is a good barrier for preventing dribble rash on the chin or for their cheeks on really cold days.

Epiderm or cetreban (possibly spelt wrong)
My 2 year old has very dry skin and the HV recommended them as suitable for tiny people.

E45 or baby aveeno works on dry skin.

Use exczema moisturisers (ask a chemist), never use soap, make sure the water is warm not hot (hot will strip the oil from the skin), put oats in muslin or old tights and run under the hot tap (it makes the water milky and is a recognised 'thing' for dry skin and eczema), moisturise damp skin within 3 mins of getting your LO out of the bath (it traps the water in the skin). I did all of this for my kids and also do it for my own dry skin eczema and it works. The eczema moisturisers you can get on prescription from your GP if money is tight or over the counter- they're really effective, especially when used on damp skin. It locks the moisture and natural oils in, though can feel a bit greasy. I use Epaderm. Standard oils like olive and almond weren't enough for me, sadly. Good luck x

We use aveeno oil in the bath and aveeno lotion afterwards.

50:50 is great

I have found the aveeno baby emollient cream really good and also the Childs farm baby wash for the bath. My dd had really dry skin but it has cleared up now after trying a few different products so I'm sticking with these ones for now!

Oilatum in the bath? It's not too expensive and you only need a small amount but it coats their skin to save you trying to lather cream on a slippery baby once they're out.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/04/2017 14:40

Another vote for Aveeno. When ds 1 was younger, we were given cetraben by the Gp, used to wash with in the bath, no other soaos

FartnissEverbeans · 01/05/2017 18:27

Oilatum and diprobase. I've also put a bit of sudocrem on my DS's eczema and it seems to have made a surprising difference.

Try upping the frequency of applying the coconut oil. Only problem with all other creams is that they contain liquid parafin etc which I personally didn't want on my baby's skin unless necessary. With dd2 we were advised to apply coconut oil 8 times per day which I did and it really helped. I now do it s bit less as the eczema is under control. I also use oats in the bath. Again things like oilatum contain liquid paraffin.

Hmmalittlefishy · 01/05/2017 18:32

Not sure if she is a little young but we found chickweed cream and lush dream cream worked on dc excema

MiniAlphaBravo · 01/05/2017 18:33

Oh and new research suggests bathing everyday is best. Again I've been doing this and seen improvement in the eczema.

Also don't use any johnsons stuff, it's really drying for them. I've used Childs farm mentioned up thread for my older dd who also had eczema but for my 10 week old I don't use anything except the oats.

Kiehls do a really good baby lotion. Only need a tiny bit (I now use it for after shaving my legs!).

Heatherbell1978 · 01/05/2017 20:22

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely try the baby Aveeno then. She has cradle cap on her head which I've found the coconut oil brilliant for. It was on her forehead and eyebrows for a while and overnight the coconut oil got rid of it so I'll definitely keep using that too.
