Reusable nappy user wanting advice on using disposables!

I am going down to see my granny on the train for a week and have decided not to lug all my washable nappies with me . So I've bought a packet of Pampers but I'm paranoid about leaks etc! Should I put a wrap on him as well just to be on the safe side? And how many disposables does a 20month old boy get through in a day? Ds uses three washables during the day and one at night. Oh yes and nighttime - will an ordinary pampers nappy last him for 12 hours overnight or should I expect leaks/changes? All of this impacts on how many clothes/bedding I take too!

Sorry for sounding so dim - it's about 8 years since I used disposables and I just don't have a clue

when I go away I usually use disposables in the day and usual nappies at night. But if you buy pampers a size too big and put them on really well they should last the night anyway (IYSWIM).

I normally take enough for 5 a day but if that's more than a packet, remember you ca buy some there.

have a nice time!

SenoraPostrophe · 12/03/2007 08:56

oh, and wraps probably not necessary.

PhoenixGirl · 12/03/2007 08:56

I'm new to cloth and still use disposables at night with my 13 month old. Pampers baby dry last all night for him but saying that over the 2 month i've been using cloth i've had 2 pampers leak.

You won't need a wrap with the disps either they'll be fine. And i'd still only change him the same as you would with washables

HTH.

TBH disposable leaks are few and far between. I've never had a prob with Pampers baby dry (apart from the 2 nights mentioned) but some people do

Miaou · 12/03/2007 09:06

Ah that's reassuring, thanks. For some reason I just didn't expect disposables to last as long as washables! I didn't want to be halfway down on the train and fishing around for dry clothes

IME nightleaks tend to happen when child is not sleeping on back - i stuff the disp with some old terry bits or a motherease stay dry liner, then you only have a couple of liners to wash.

Miaou · 12/03/2007 09:12

Ah right - ds is a lie-on-front-with-legs-drawn-up-underneath sleeper

I will be staying with my brother so I can wash stuff there so I might just take a couple of real nappies for nighttime.

You'll use the same amount of disposables as cloth, IME.

I also have two lying on front legs drawn up sleepers.

If disps were shite, more people would use cloth

Have a lovely trip!

(When are you going? You can always do a trial disposables day and night?)

staceym11 · 12/03/2007 09:21

disposables wont need a wrap over the top, leaks imo are few and far between at that age (my dd did leak in disposables but she was over 2 and doing proper wees!) a papmers, either baby dry or active fit should last the night, they used to last 13hrs over night with my dd at that age! you will need the same amount of disposables as you would reusables! have fun!

hunkerkerplunker · 12/03/2007 09:23

Don't go up a size either - don't put him in ones that he's at the upper limit of weight on though.

DS1 is in size 5, DS2 is in 4+.

staceym11 · 12/03/2007 09:25

yeah humker is right, generally if the size is too big they will leak straight out the leg hole! lol

NannyL · 12/03/2007 09:30

my 18 month old charge is in active fit4+ he is 13kg btw

they dont leak at all.

he uses 3 nappies per 24 hours + howver many dirty nappies he has!.... anything between 1 and 5 per day!

Has a new nappy
morning upon waking (8.30ish)
before nap (12.30ish)
after bath (1800 ish)

so his night nappy does 14.5 hours and is fine

he also drinks LOADS and is a heavy wetter

BTW im a reusable fan as well... HATE disposables!

Miaou · 12/03/2007 09:47

Ah right - I'm not sure what nappies I've got (in fact my mum bought them) - I kind of assumed it was all marketing crap and they all did the same job !

Not going for a few weeks yet hunker - combination of looking forward to it and rather nervous about it tbh! (Not the travelling, the dealing with my rellies )

Miaou,

Just remember, when using sposies:

  • don't try to remove the liner after use
  • don't try to put them in a bucket - even if dry pailing.
  • and whatever you do, don't try to wash them.

HTH,

Emma

Flamesparrow · 12/03/2007 22:00

Oh, I bought some of the nature babykind or something like that from sainsburys (chlorine free etc)... they sort of disintergrate a bit by the end of the night .

Saying that though, if I had to buy some again, I would still choose those

Miaou · 12/03/2007 22:01

pmsl makesachange!! I have to say, when I got reusables for ds, even though it was years since I had changed a nappy, I was paranoid I was going to throw away one of my precious totsbots by mistake!

robbosmum · 12/03/2007 22:02

im also a real nappy addict, have used some dispos for emergencies and have found that all brands are more or less the same quality, except for disappointingly the environmental friendly ones which were a bit leaky

misdee · 12/03/2007 22:03

lol Miaou, the other month i had to buy dispys as dh was in hospital. i was in boots with personalclown going 'what bloody size is she in, i dont haver a clue,'

Flamesparrow · 12/03/2007 22:10

I did that too Misdee!!! Ended up thinking "well, I think nephew is size 2, so he must be about size 3..." Turned out the eco ones have smaller sizings

pobletsmum · 12/03/2007 22:11

LOL Makesachange!

Miaou,
I have a front-sleeping-legs-tucked-up son in disposibles and from time to time we do have leaks in night nappies (NEVER daytime ones, and i sometimes leave them for hours on end!). None of my friends have had this problem. Maybe try liners like Malaleche said? I find Pampers Baby Dry to be best, and go for the largest size I can get away with. At the moment, DS (small-average sized little boy, aged 21 months) is in size 5+. The most important thing would be to make sure the size is right. DS is pobably not heavy enough for the description on the packet. Can you test the nappies your mum has bought or are they at your destination?

All this said, it might be safest for you to take a couple of cloth night nappies (for if it all goes pear-shaped), if that's what you're happiest with...
