Can I potty train my 19monthold while breastfeeding my 2monthold!?

DS1 has had the worst nappy rash for the last week (I am talking open sores!!) and I have been letting him run around with no nappy on to try and get rid of it.

He has been telling me when he needs the toilet most of the time and although we have had afew accidents, he is really enthusiastic.

Trouble is I also have a 2 month old DD and I am breastfeeding her so if I am feeding her and DS needs the toilet, then I just cant take him. He does not like his potty (it is a cheap one so cant be very comfy) but will sit quite happily on a padded seat on the toilet. SO I cant just have the potty in the room while bf and cant run up the stairs with him while feedingmy dd.

It would be easier to wait til summer when dd is weaning, but the idea of not having to change 2 lots of nappy is pretty apealing!!

I am worried that I will miss this 'window' (is that a myth?) and he will not be as enthusiastic as he is now in afew months.

19months is pretty early.
But if he's ready, he's ready.

DD left nappies when she was 2.5 and ds was 8 weeks. It was pretty hard, in that you constantly feel like you're either feeding or catching pee (or worse).

If I were you I would look into getting a more comfy potty or one of those potty chairs.

Can you feed and go? I used to pretty much feed ds while chasing dd to the loo.

In the end, it only lasts for a very short time and while I found it incredibly stressful (and I was the one instigating it, because I felt it was about time) the chasing all over the place only lasted about a week before we were all more confident about dd's bladder.

I have just been looking at one of those potty chairs as he is quite tall and cant sit properly on the low pottys. Might invest in one for downstairs. then keep usin the toilet when i am not feeding her.

He is so pleased with himself when he does it i feel guilty if i leave him in a nappy when we go out.

Can you run upstairs while feeding if dd is in a ring sling?

I think the window is a myth, and also think that 19 mo is very young, but can see why you think it is a good time to go for it.

i've been putting ds on potty at 9 mo so he has a very small bum but the baby bjorn small potty is great for him as is the £2 boots own one - all others I've looked at are much bigger, bought a couple before found those

sorry thats no advice about whether you can potty train whilst bfeeding but hope it helps you finds comfy potty if you decide to go for it

Dragonhart, thank for bringing back some hilarious memories of dashing across the room with newborn attached to breast to put 24 month old dd on the potty

I somehow managed to potty train dd whilst bf ds but seem to have repressed most of the memories in the intervening 3 years!!

Good luck

We had a crap day today and DS didnt tell me once when he wanted to go to the toilet. Been cleaning wee all day and then he did a big poo on the sofa while looking out of the window. I was bf DD and had to just watch!

Not sure if that means he is not ready or just had a bad day? Been really good so far and he was a little so and so today. Been doing everything he knows he is not supposed to do.

So what I am asking is do all children who are potty training have days like this or is he not ready?!

No!

My DS2 was very enthusiastic to use the loo when he was barely 2(wanted to copy big brother)

19 months for a boy seems very young

Now DS2 is 3 and having a mjor relapse, pooing his pants every day! and getting his pants, as he says, "a little bit damp" before he goes to wee.

and i am bf ing my 7 wk old!!! When he needs to go, I usually have to disenage baby and deal with the s* (literally!)

then wash my hands and off to go....

so my opinion is a little clouded....

Yes, all you experienced mums were right! 19months is too young.

He has started to get stressed when I put him on the toilet and when he sees me going he leaves the bathroom rather than saying 'weee, weee, weee!' til he hears me going like he did before. An he says he needs a wee when he is bored and wants to go upstairs and read his books!

So potty will be put in mothballs til bf finished. Cant say I am sad. Thanks for all the advice. Hope DS gets better again Annie. xxx

i think just keep potty out,if he uses it he uses it if he doesnt he doesnt.imo its not that young,do you use cloth or disposables?id recomend pouch sling to bf whilst chasing wee!worth a go,if it doesnt work out never mind.

Dragonhart · 16/03/2007 11:49

Have to say, he has never gone on the potty. Even got a fancy one that looks like a toilet then becomes a step stool but he just wanted to go on the toilet.

I use reusables and have bought a stuffable swaddlebee pocket nappy to try as a pull up so that if h does want to go I can whip them down!

absolutely. what dont you try taking on an OU course, a couple of full time jobs outside home, a few pets and do some voluntary stuff on the side too, while youre at it?

Dragonhart · 16/03/2007 11:59

lol dither! Yes, I have to say I possibly underestimated just how hard it would be!
