Did your DC1 start playing with baby toys again when DC2 was born?

DS 2 is 6 month old and getting a bit more interested in toys. DC1 is 3.8.

Before DS2 was born, I totally discretely whilst DS1 was at nursery packed away lots of baby / early toddler toys. His room was overflowing anyway as he'd just had his birthday.

I opened one of those boxes yesterday. I couldn't believe it when I say DS1 clutching Sophie the Giraffe upon waking up... he had completely ignored that one as a baby. He then spent the morning happily playing with the shape sorter... and took away a toy (four plastic balls and a hammer... you have to hammer the balls into the toy) into his bedroom, saying "This is mine. I am taking it back."

I am now thinking that DS2 will never get a look into any toys at all...

Yes dd1 played with toys that she never touched as a baby when dc2 had them! He'll get over it, it is natural turf marking. I found as dd2 became more interesting to dd1 we had less jealousy over toys

Ds1 and dd were 7&5 when ds2 was born. They love playing with the baby / toddler stuff, especially now the more interesting stuff is coming out like the whole wooden train set (massive collection!) happyland etc. They're also loving 'help' ds2 watch all of their fave toddler tv programmes like Thomas, peppa pig, ITNG, etc!

Yes, definitely yes. My 3 year old spent most of this afternoon pushing a wooden baby walker around the house . When ds2 was born we had to buy a second bouncy chair because ds1 suddenly regained interest in his old chair (for the first time since he was about 6mo).

On the plus side ds2 seems a lot more interested in ds1's toys than his own so it sort of works out!

Ps am loving the 'I'm taking it back' comment! Hilarious bless him. Could you get ds1 involved in picking 'today's toy' everyday for ds2? (Tell him to pick which one he wants first...)

Only got one ds but he often plays with "baby" toys if he comes across them at a library or cafe.

I am wondering how many more "I am taking it back" we'll get ! Good idea though to ask him to pick a toy for DS2, I hadn't thought of that!

DS2 seems to be hero-worshiping DS1 anyway... he is so keen to join in but the hands and knees don't quite join up yet to allow for a crawl...

Totally. My oldest was 4 when the baby was born. I am dreading getting the rocking horse down from the loft because he'll be all over it (with his knees around his ears).

Yes and she was 5 and at school! Even now at 8 she will happily watch programmes my 3 yr old likes! She is reliving the early years!

Totally. I've also got a three year old who's taken to cuddling Sophie the sodding giraffe in bed. And about a million times a day firmly telling her 7mo sister: "no, babies can't have it's dangerous for you". (I.e I don't want you to play with it.)

Its not uncommon for my 5 year old to swap his 7 month old brother toys he says its only fair ro give his brother a turn of his toys and obviously he cant get another of his toys he just has to have the baby one so its a fair swap ds2 is already a transformers fan.

After my DD2 (1 month) was born, DD1 (2.5 years) has found a dummy and now walks around with it in her mouth. We never even used a dummy for DD1, and we're not using it for DD2. It was in a box of bottles that my friend had passed on to me

Yes. DC1 is 2.5, DC2 is 7 months. DC1 is playing with all the baby toys, and has mastered climbing in and out of the jumperoo, which is really quite impressive.

Your answers are making me ! In particular "this is dangerous for babies"... a sentence also heard in our house.

Oh yes, DS1 has managed to climb into DS2's floor seat - with the insert still inside!!!

More and more toys are now making their way back into DS1's bedroom, which is worrying.... but funny at the same time.

DS (10yrs) will play "with" DD (10m) at any opportunity. He loves her musical toys and bath toys best.... 🤔

Baby toys were a waste of time for DS2 once he was at the moving stage. From that point onwards only things meant for 2yo and older were considered.

We had a 2.8y age gap so this may not work with an older & wiser sibling but we didn't tell DD that they were her old toys we were getting from the loft but that it was one just the same as hers as she had enjoyed hers so much and that, yes, it was strange that hers had just disappeared. This didn't stop her playing with them but I think she was less possessive.
