What age do people roughly stop sterilising bottles?

It's advised until 1 year which is what I did

seven201 · 24/03/2017 21:20

I'm going to keep sterilising until she stops having bottles. I pop them in the dishwasher so it's no bother. I think the uk recommends until 12 months but I think a lot of people stop at 6 months. As long as you clean really thoroughly you'll be fine. It's the left over milk that's the issue.

WhingingTulip · 24/03/2017 21:23

We stopped at about 7 months as by then he was crawling and trying to put everything in his mouth anyway. We just make sure they're washed very thoroughly!

We stopped at 7 months too.

CatsCantFlyFast · 24/03/2017 21:55

6/7 months. I didn't see the point when everything they touched went in their mouth

fabulous01 · 24/03/2017 21:56

I went to a year but not sure if it was necessary

clarabellski · 24/03/2017 22:05

We went to 12 months but that was because we did the naughty method of making up bottles in advance and storing them in fridge, so wanted sterile bottles for that. I didn't sterilise bottles if I was using the ready mix liquid on days out etc.

It was such a joyous day when we threw away the bottles :o)

shirleycartersaidso · 24/03/2017 22:18

I stopped just before a year as we were going on holiday but by that point they were licking and eating all sorts of stuff.

kel1493 · 24/03/2017 22:23

It's recommended until 6 months for everything except bottles, which should be done until 1 year, or as long as formula is being used.
My lo is nearly 19 months and has toddler formula, so we will be sterilising until he stops having his formula.

seven201 · 25/03/2017 07:41

About the 'they put everything in heir mouth anyway' school of thought. It's the left over off milk that is dangerous, not just general dirt. But as long as you wash up really thoroughly then it's fine. A lot of countries don't bother with sterilising. Nhs says until 12 months though.

Until you stop using formula

So first birthday here

ThursdayLastWeek · 25/03/2017 07:43

I stopped when the last if the formula ran out, approx 12.5 mo.

He does still have cows milk in bottles.

Heirhelp · 25/03/2017 12:30

My DD is 10 1/2 months. Do you mean I nolonger need to steralise dummies?

Turneeps · 25/03/2017 13:36

Anything coming into contact with formula needs sterilising for as long as you use formula.
There is a tiny chance of nasty bugs in formula powder, the chance of baby catching the bug is very very small but the consequences are bad (hospital, possible death).
Whereas chances of getting a bug from dirty carpet or dummy are higher but consequences are small (sore tummy it diarrhoea).

Funnyface1 · 25/03/2017 17:49

I did it until 12 months with my first as advised. This time stopping at 11 months when we'll be going on holiday.

Brollsdolls · 25/03/2017 22:26

You don't need to sterilise the dummies Heir. Or water cups or plates etc...

Heirhelp · 26/03/2017 09:30

Yay!! Although as we sterilise bottles it is generally no hardship.

ThisIsActuallyHappening · 27/03/2017 00:33

Just checking as I see formula mentioned a lot, presumably the same applies to feeding expressed milk in bottles?

I was told to sterilise in boiling water as we will only be using the one/occasional bottle ... In which case, would you do that before or after it's gone through the dishwasher? (Or is putting bottles through the dishwasher in the first place a no-no? Blush ) Thanks!

unicorn24 · 27/03/2017 16:48

Thanks everyone

Bottles are fine the dish washer as long as the are properly clean. We use the Mam ones were the top and the bottom come off so I know they are clean. They can become discoloured if there is tomato in the dishwasher.

I was told by breast feeding specialist midwife that bottles for breast milk don't need to be sterilised.

Heirhelp · 27/03/2017 17:17

You have to sterilise the bottles after washing.

redandwhite1 · 27/03/2017 21:32

We moved house (put stuff into storage) so stopped then, he was 10 months

ThisIsActuallyHappening · 27/03/2017 21:39

Thanks Heirhelp , much appreciated.
