My DS is 5 and in Reception and for some reason is very keen to learn French (possibly something to do with football and Thierry Henry ). DOes anyone have any recommendations for books, tapes or videos? Languages are not my strong point...

You should start by finding out whether there are any groups in your area such as Club Francais or La Jolie Ronde, as it would be more fun for your dd to learn with other children. Don't really know about books and tapes however, but I'm sure others will!

Orchard Toys do a French version of their Shopping List box game, called Les Courses a Faire.
Our ds is taking an interest in French too, Stickynote, but his has been triggered by Asterix and Tintin, as we have French and English versions around the house ( I studied French to degree level).
We don't have either of the clubs Frenchgirl mentions immediately locally but are thinking of trying to enrol ds if his school doesn't start him on French at 7 (as promised...)

I went to Waterstones and got DD a French Picture Dictionary. I can't remember exactly which one but it has a big picture on each page of a room in a house with french words for each item dotted around the outside with a smaller picture beside.
DD got hers at 5 and loved it.

Last year I videoed some BBC French for kids programmes in the middle of the night at about this time of year, called Salut Serge, and they are great. (Search BBC Learning Zone, and they may be showing them again).

They have French text books from the library, which we borrow. We also have the KidSpeak CDRom, which is OK - the boys (5 and 6) enjoy it, but I don't rate it very highly. There may well be better products on the market.

We also have the Orchard Toys French games. Particularly recommend the Trouvons L'Image.

Depending on your location there are French afterschool clubs for children, with immersion teaching. I'd love for my boys to do this sort of thing, but not available in my area unfortunately.
