Endless washing! How do you keep up?!

With 2 under 2?! Ds1 us 19 months. He's very windy and this seems to mean a poo. Which leaks.

A couple of poo stained outfits yesterday after I'd dine two loads of washing

I leave stuff soaking until I have enough for a load and I don't separate lights (unless they're super-posh expensive items!).

We've only got 1 child (19 months) and I do her laundry once a week, 1 load of clothes and 1 load of bedding & towels.

NapQueen · 02/03/2017 17:51

All these who launder loads - how frequently do you wash towels? My dm uses a clean towel on her clean body after a bath or shower then puts it in the laundry basket!!

Nuts!!

We gather all ours up once a week and wash them unless they start to smell in the meantime which is never

toffeeboffin · 02/03/2017 17:54

It's bloody relentless the laundry. Usually do one load a day.

Just glad we have a tumble dryer!

I wash towels after about 3/4 uses (slovenly)

Gillian1980 · 02/03/2017 18:19

I wash mine and DH towels weekly and we each have about 4-5 showers a week. Dd towels tend to get used once but they're just little baby towels so don't take up much room in the wash. She has 3 baths a week unless more are specifically needed.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/03/2017 19:51

I wash towels weekly, and bed linen fortnightly.

I use baby grows for as long as possible. Ds1 wore them til he walked and they started tripping him.up. Still wore them to bed though.

I'm amazed at the amount some of you wash. This thread has made me wonder exactly why I'm struggling with it!

I've tried different sizes and brands of nappy (big baby. Used sizes 1 and 2, pampers, tesco, sainsbury.) they all leak.

I bought a bigger drum washing machine when mine broke recently. Two very messy kids that have clubs and that on top of school uniforms that always gets lunch chucked round them every day, get changed and play outside in the muck after etc. My drum was 8 but have really noticed the difference with a 9.

FATEdestiny · 02/03/2017 20:55

Honestly, whenever I am amazed to see the wash basket empty at the same time as the washing machine being empty.

Bedding and towels are a lower priority to clothes, especially with 3 school uniforms, numerous football kits, pe kits and club uniform to get washed on a deadline.

But they are usually done weekly. I'd like to do them more, if I had two washing machines (my dream - how sad am I?) I probably would.

Geist - id definately prefers second washer to a bigger than 8kg load. It's not necessarily the load size that's the problem, it's the fact that the cotton/high spin wash cycle takes over 3h to run. It's time issue more than drum size issue that's my problem.

Two loads takes about 7 hours - ridiculous. I never trust the short cycles to actually wash stuff properly.

bonzo77 · 02/03/2017 21:17

Kids towels weekly weekly after swimming. My towel and hand towels / bath mats: when it looks / smells grubby or there's space in the machine. DH's towel: no idea. I don't do his washing.

NapQueen · 02/03/2017 21:27

Gosh 《stares whistfully into the middle distance》 I could have all my bedding done on a 3 hour wash and at the same time get everything else done in 1hr loads in a second machine.

Ahhhh the dream.

FATEdestiny · 02/03/2017 21:37

Exactly!

Ahhh, the dream....

We don't have the space for a second washer. I need to snap out of it!

Trinpy · 02/03/2017 21:59

I only have 2 dcs and still end up doing 1-2 loads every day, though it seems to be getting less since dc2 grew out of the tiny baby stage. Neither of my dcs seem capable of keeping their clothes clean so they usually have a complete outfit change every day - dc1 went through 2 whole outfits today Hmm. Dh and I both wear uniforms to work, so that adds 3 more loads a week. Everything else I only wash when I absolutely have to.

I load the washing machine the night before and set it up on the timer. It gets hung up first thing or while the baby naps. I sort the dry clothes during the baby's afternoon nap and put it away when Dh gets home. I only iron the bare minimum and that gets done in the evening after the dcs are in bed. Sometimes with very pooey stuff I just bin it (I buy cheap/secondhand vests, sleepsuits and pants) because I can't face having to wash it Blush.

isthistoonosy · 02/03/2017 22:07

Try using two nappies at the same time to limit leaks.

isthistoonosy · 02/03/2017 22:10

We have two kids (2 and 3) and we wash 5-6 times a month.

PickAChew · 02/03/2017 22:17

Having lots of stuff in similar colours makes life much easier. Half of our laundry is on the blue-grey spectrum with half of the rest black! All that ends up on half loads is whites and more delicate stuff (mostly mine!)

Drying is simplified by tumble drying everything that can tolerate it, unless it's too hot for the dryer to be on and dry enough outside for stuff to actually dry out there if I go to the trouble of hanging it out.

When mine were babies, I just kept their babygrows, vests etc in a basket, so putting away was easy and it was easy enough to see whether I desperately needed to get a wash on after a messy day without having to deliberately check.

And, at 2.5 weeks, that babygrow is likely to be outgrown in 3 days time, without you even expecting it! Just chuck it in with the darker stuff!

PickAChew · 02/03/2017 22:26

The nappy leaks might be reduced by changing brand, btw. I had a huggies boy and a pampers boy. Leaks in the wrong brand. Huggies boy still has the chubbier thighs as a tween.

BabyHamster · 02/03/2017 22:36

I don't wash clothes unless they're smelly or dirty. Always surprised when I see threads on here and people say they wash tops after every wear, trousers every two wears etc. I don't have any of these rules.

Only wash towels once a week. Is that gross? I'm never quite sure if I should be washing them more.

Another vote also for leaving baby clothes soaking until you can wash them. Works great.

Sistafromanuthamista · 03/03/2017 12:32

There's only me, DP and toddler dd but I do 4-5 washes a week (1 white, 1 light, 1 dark, towels/bedding and another load of clothes if needed). We have no tumble dryer and a dark north facing garden so I have to dry the laundry in my bedroom during the winter ands I hate having it hanging around permanently. Plus the room needs a chance to dry out (we have a dehumidifier).

Mine and DP's t-shirts need washing after each wear but cardigans/jumpers/trousers usually get a few days wear before they need a wash.

I try to re use dd's clothes where possible. Her vest during the day is usually the one she wore to bed (absolute nightmare to dress her in the morning so this is partly necessity as it's one less thing to wrestle her out and into!!).

Mind I never have an empty laundry basket. Our Xmas jumpers are still in there,I'll probably wash them in the summer when I can hang them outside Grin

Op - I remember you having issues with your eldest and overnight leaks. Have you tried a different brand/different size? Personally I found ALDI were the best for newborn and thereafter pampers have been the best

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/03/2017 19:39

Oldest hasn't had anappy leak for quite some time. I used Aldi with him til he outgrew size 3, then tesco. We are on sainsbury 5+ now and pampers pants at night.

I need to.get to Aldi. Sainsbury nappies aren't working at all for ds2.
