Toilet training and eczema

I'd be very grateful for some advice about how to potty train a child who has persistent eczema on his legs. Ds will scratch his legs to bits whenever they're exposed, even when dosed up with piriton. I really can't imagine letting him run round without any trousers on, which seems to be what most people do. When his legs are covered up they don't seem to bother him that much.

For the last week ds, who's almost three, has sat on the toilet every evening and done a pooh, but whilst he's sitting there will be scratching constantly. I've tried distracting with jigsaw puzzles placed on a tray over his legs, or letting him put stickers on a bit of paper, but the scratching never stops.

I suppose the answer is loose trousers, rather than bare legs when I decide to bite the bullet and go for it properly - but any other suggestions or encouraging stories about how your child coped with their eczema and potty training would be great.

My ds often has flare ups on his legs (poor thing inherited all the crappy bits from me) and like your ds sits on the toilet scratching away, I kept telling him time and time again not to scratch but I know exactly how they feel. I've been known to get a metal comb and scratch my legs when my eczema is playing up. The only way I managed to get him to stop doing this was to have his tub of cream next to the loo and when he sat on the toilet he would rub a little bit into his legs. Give it a go. It worked for me. Good luck chuck, will be thinking of you.

Great idea woodpops, will definately give it a go. I do just about manage to ignore his scratching but I find myself getting really tense every time it starts, which doesn't seem to sit very well with the laid back approach to potty training that I'm aiming for.

The thought of you with a metal comb made me wince. Hope you're not going through a bad patch at the moment.

I hope it works for you CER. My ds thinks it's a great game sitting there rubbing his cream into his legs and as a result of it has very few flare ups now.

The scratching with a metal comb is very grim isn't it??
