Dutch speakers in Newcastle

I know we have quite a few Dutch speakers on MN, but so far none in Newcastle or the North East.
Thought I'd send another message out there in case there are some lurkers about.
My DH is Dutch, and it would be great if DD had some other Dutch speakers to play with. She's 14 months, btw.

Hi Fibernie, what a shame I'm in Hertfortshire! Good luck!

SmudgeMum · 23/04/2007 23:03

Hi Fibernie. DH is half Dutch (his Mum is Dutch and it is his first language) and he really wants our DS (aged 11 weeks!) to be able to understand and speak Dutch too. At the moment DS can coo and goo in any language going but DH is trying to talk Dutch to him and I'm talking English although I understand a fair bit. Don't think this is going to help you at this stage but....
Are you doing the mile for maude? If so, we'll see you there.

Hi there Smudgemum, thanks for reply. We've chatted on the newcastle meet-ups thread I think but I've not managed any of the meet-ups since I went back to work.
DH is Dutch (both parents) and we're in Holland at the moment on holiday. I understand quite a lot, and speak enough to get by in simple conversation. It's hard work though.
Looking forward to M4Maude - raised nearly 80quid already. Will see you there, and look forward to meeting little one!

HI Fibernie,
I realised that we'd chatted before after I'd written the message. We've been over to Holland quite a few times (before LO) and I could understand but would always reply in German. I au paired in Germany 10 years ago, when I was much younger!! and so was pretty good at German. I've forgotton loads now but can still jsut about string a sentence together. Unfortunately DH Oma died last year so we probably won't be going over so much now. His Mum is Dutch but in the Caribbean - hooray! - and we are planning a visit there mid-June.
I can't believe Mile4Maude is only a few weeks away now. We're doing pretty well for sponsorship too. Is your DH coming along too?

fibernie · 25/04/2007 12:49

He hasn't said, but will encourage him too if yours is going to be there. Maybe we could go for coffee or somthing afterwards?
How fab to have relatives in the Caribbean! We're in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border - nothing to do here, but lots of walks and cycling! DD loves her bike seat and she's off cycling with Oma and Opa this afternoon while DH and sit in the garden with books.
Weather is glorious - sunny and warm. We leave her tomorrow for Amsterdam to spend a couple of days with a friend there. Plan to go to the Keukenhof to see the flowers on the way back. Back to Newcastle on Sat. I seem to remember you live somewhere in West of city, right? We're in High Heaton, near Sainsburys.

HI Fibernie,
Hope you enjoyed Amsterdam and that the weather stayed nice. Do you fly over to Holland or take the ferry? We're planning on taking DS swimming tomorrow if we're brave enough. Someone said that the baby pool at West Denton (yes you were right about where we live) is really lovely and warm so we're going to risk it.
I think there was a general plan to have a big picnic after Mile4Maude (I guess depending on the weather). We have no plans to rush off but we are supposed to have one of DH friends staying with us that w-e. He said that he'd come on the walk with us. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it would be lovely to meet the Fibernie family and I'm sure we can find time to chat!! We'll have to listen out for the cloggy speak!!!! DS got a pair of slipper clogs from his great-aunt but they're a bit big yet!

fibernie · 27/04/2007 19:08

Well, sounds like we have a plan! We're still in Amsterdam actually, just got back from a trip to the centre to eat pancakes, they were lekker . It's been really hot here again today, sun cream and sunhat weather. DD just went to bed, much later than normal and very very tired, but happy after her pancakes and trip on the metro.
We fly back tomorrow, it's easier for us since DH's father bought a car seat and can pick us up from the airport. Tomorrow will be a test though, since we're now staying with friends and have to make our way to Schiphol via two trains at a very early hour! Will try to get DH to speak loudly to DD so you can recognise us! When he speaks English he sounds Scottish like me!
Have fun swimming - I only know Gosforth pool is really nice and warm for babies.
Look forward to meeting the Smudgemum clan too!

I'm in the North East (Gateshead), living with my English partner and our one year old daughter. I would love to meet up with other Dutch families in the area, but I'm really struggling to find any. Are there any Dutch mums/dads around who are in the NE area and looking to meet up with fellow Dutch speakers?
