Just interested really - what time do your 10yos go to bed?? Just been away for a couple of days with friends and was surprised that I went to bed before her DD on several occasions....

Am just about to go and "tuck in" my 10 yo, by which I mean extract her from the headphones and switch off light. It's now 9.15 pm, which is much later than a school night, when she goes between 8 and 9. She never stays up later than me.

Mine is a liabilty.
Goes to bed (forced up the stairs moaning)at 8.45pm but as she is an insomniac she can read til about 10.30pm in bed.

Do you think they were up late as you were there and it was exciting?

Toady · 23/02/2007 21:29

My DS (10) goes to his bedroom at 7.30pm to read or watch a film. Lights out at 9.30pm on school nights, I know not brilliant having a television in his room but he likes his own space and it works well for us, after putting my two little ones to bed, usually can put my feet up about 8/8.30pm.

Does this sound ok ?? {{not that I worry about EVERY decision I make regarding the kids}}

Thanks for the replies - I think that her normal bedtime is about 9.30 -10pm and she makes it up at w/ends - getting up at 10am. Unfortunately she waas sharing with a 4yo & 7yo, so was up at 7ish every day. Also likes to spend her evenings with the adults, which kind of put a dampner on things for me, havign to watch my ps&qs all the way to bed...

Hey Toady, I am not offering an opinion on bedtime, I was just surprised by the lateness and general tiredness and irritability. I know 9yo's that go to bed at 7.30... My DD is 4yo and I know that she need to be in bed by 7.30 to ensure that the next day is not awful. Just looking forward to what is in store, I guess... Must admit, that I think a child free evening is VERY important to me (atm).

Oh I agree.
Does my head in that my dd1 is hanging around nattering all thru tv just as I have flopped onto the sofa after putting the other 2 to bed, but I would feel mean sending her earlier.

Have a rl friend whose dd ia same age and all hers got to bed at 7pm. Marvellous for her but humilating for the dd at school.

Y'see, in my advanced years, I really cannot remember when I went to bed at 7, 8, 9, 10 years old, but I do know that I didn't spend it with my folks. As a bookworm, I probably just read in my room, or knitted, or made clothes for my Barbie. But I would rather have taken my eyes out with a cocktail stick than spend it with my parents....

school nights - bed at 8, lights out 8.30 but often talks to sister till 9.30/10

weekend - bed 9, lights out 9.30 (except dancing on ice/x factor nights which we watch together)

I know quite a few of dd's friends seem to stay up a bit later though.

shouldbedoingsomethingelse · 04/03/2007 18:57

my mother told my DD when she was 9 that if she stayed awake later her body would get used to it and she would be allowed to stay up later!!!!!!

So my DD who is now 11 with a 15 yo's attitude is often awake at 11pm. (in her bed but awake.) The result is one very grumpy girl who argues with everyone in the house including me. Reversing this "advice" from granny is proving very hard!

BTW DD is no longer allowed to sleepover at my mother's house, because "advice is crap and each meal was chocolate because "that what DD asked for""

Blandmum · 04/03/2007 18:58

8.15 for mine, and she tend ro be asleep by 9.

But we get up at 6.15

RosaLuxembourg · 05/03/2007 00:57

Mine is in bed by 8ish, reads until 9 then lights out. 7 year old DD is normally lights out at 8.30. 4 year old DD was still awake at 9.45 tonight despite all our best efforts, sleeping draughts, mallets etc and this happens most nights. What SHE will be like at 10 doesn't bear thinking about.

I think for Parents it's important to establish a time when your child goes 'upstairs' then agree a lights out time.
