4 months old and teething

I feel so sorry for the poor mite. He's teething (drooling, red cheeks, very unhappy and intermittent temperature). I've given paracetamol and ibuprofen but he's still upset and has only had two very short naps tonight. I'm trying to get him to sleep now and failing.

What else can I do to help him?

Not a lot really. My ds cut his first 2 teeth at 4mo 5 days. He's now 14mo, has 13 teeth and is STILL teething. It's just something you have to ride out with them. Anbesol liquid might help? And Sophie giraffe or similar.

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 13/12/2016 18:04

I'll get some anbesol tomorrow, thanks and I'll order a Sophie now. I have been given a silicone teething necklace which he is a big fan of.

He's normally such a chilled out little baby! I think the pain keeps waking him. I keep on rocking him to sleep and getting him down and then 5minutes later he's awake and crying. It's exhausting!

Sorry to hear you've had quite a long teething time! Hope it gets easier for you soon.

Personally I wouldn't use any gels. They're advised against in the States and ohe countries now.

Nelson's teething powders and camilia drops were great for ds who started teething at 2 months and has been constant until he hit 3 years.

Thanks for the recommendation, bummymummy. I googled the powders you mentioned, but it looks like they are very sugary, so I think I'll keep them as a last resort. I'd never heard of them before though.

I'll go and ask a pharmacist tomorrow. As a naive first time Mum, it was only when friends pointed out his cheeks and dribble this weekend and asked if he was teething that got me to look inside his mouth. I hadn't actually realised there were so many teething products out there!

I didn't think camilia had any sugar in. The Nelsons had a little xylitol in but after three weeks of ds being up every 45 minutes I caved!

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 13/12/2016 18:40

I don't think it'll take me 3 weeks to cave the rate DS is crying now! He'll stay asleep being bounced or rocked but a few minutes after being put down he wakes up crying. Proper sobbing. He's knackered, bless him.

I always used bonjella to rub into gums, do they still sell it?

peaceloveandbiscuits · 13/12/2016 18:54

Anbesol liquid is the only thing that works here. The powders did fuck all and gels just slid off his gums. DS started teething at 3 months and he was too little for the traditional teething toys because they were too hard and he couldn't hold them properly. Sophie la Girafe was brilliant for him as she is soft and easy for little ones to grasp.

There is a Nuby teething ring, quite basic, with a green silicone brush section and two fabric ears: all the babies in our antenatal group Loved it for teething. Also we froze icecubes of her milk and gave her them in the weaning net bag things (sorry, can't think what they're called!) and later icecubes of purees. That helped our girl a lot.

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 13/12/2016 19:06

Could I give frozen cubes of milk at 4 months, or it that more for when we start to wean?

Thanks for all the recommendations. I was given an amazon gift card for him recently, so shall buy lots of teething toys for him.

What did you all do if they repeatedly woke with the pain? Give up on sleep or just keep going trying to get them down?!

4 months is a shit age for sleep even without teething. Just do whatever works.
Yes ice cubes of milk are fine in those Nuby finger food net things.

Timetogrowup2016 · 13/12/2016 19:33

This sounds silly but maybe his not teething .
It sounds more like over tiredness

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 13/12/2016 19:35

He is definitely overtired despite my best efforts for sleep, but I can see the start of a tooth coming through on the bottom front of his mouth so I think it's teething pain stopping him from sleep.

He's such a good sleeper normally! I'm not used to this!

MuppetsChristmasCarol · 13/12/2016 19:38

And not a silly suggestion of overtiredness at all. I think that is part of it.

This teether was amazing and really easy for ds to hold.

Whisky is frowned upon right? WinkGrin

(Disclaimer, I will obviously not give whisky to a 4month old. Can't as we don't have any.)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have various teething things in my amazon basket now and will see the pharmacist tomorrow.

I've got him asleep again in the bouncer - I'm too scared to stop rocking! Counting down until my DH finishes work (10ish Sad).

My Dad did the whiskey thing to ds at 4 months. Hmm

Have to say it worked.
