When do babies start naming objects and pictures?

I know that official milestones are quite stretched and different from the reality. I have searched online and found that they would start pointing to the picture if you name it at 15 months and naming 1-2 pictures after 18 months. DS is 11 months only and can name 4-5 pictures. Am I raising a genius? 😊

Here you go

but do remember all dc are different, and the odd sound that you recognise as a word might not equal early entry for Cambridge Wink

My DD is 16 months and can name
Dog
Cat
Cow
Horse
Sheep
Cow
Rabbit
Train
Car
Star
Moon
Sun
Fish
Teddy
Doll
Book
Eyes
Nose
Mouth
Ears
Shoes
Socks
Orange
Water
Juice
Apple
Banana
Strawberry
Blueberry
Pasta
Cheese
Toast
Cucumber
Rabbit
Tree
Dolly
Baby
Numbers 1-7
And a few letters from flash cards

She also signs 90% of these

She can name maybe 10 family/close friends in photos.

I don't think we're raising a genius. She just loves books and has access to them all the time we're at home and enjoys reading and looking at the pictures together.

blinkineckmum · 07/12/2016 07:22

My 13mo says
Hi
Hiya
Dad
Mum
Nana
Up
Cat
Duck
A couple of other family members
Ta
oo oo for monkey
raa for lion

I think that's it.
Her brother had 35 words at 15mo
They're all different and catch up/ overtake at different rates.

Oh no. I wish I hadn't read this thread Sad.

DS just had his first birthday and isn't waving or pointing and is only saying mama reliably.

Cathster · 07/12/2016 07:36

I wouldn't worry Laundry Queen! They develop different skills at different ages. My DD is 14 months and still doesn't wave reliably, she can point but her words are eh?! And ta. That's it Xmas Grin

Nyancat · 07/12/2016 07:40

Don't worry laundry. I had one who spoke really well in full sentences from very early on and one who is nearly 2 and has only recently had a real language explosion. They have both been v different in all other aspects of development neither one ahead of the other consistently, they get there when they are ready.

LaundryQueenHatesIroning · 07/12/2016 07:42

Thanks Cathster and Nyancat. I hadn't thought twice about it before I read this thread!

O2BBesideTheSea · 07/12/2016 07:46

I wouldn't worry either. DS had loads of words at a young age, but didn't learn to climb out of a cot until 3.5. DD doesn't say half as many words but climbs on EVERYTHING. She is much more physical and braver (she is 20 months)

They'll catch up!

GrumpyDullard · 07/12/2016 07:49

DD1 is 9 and no-one gives a shit what she could do when she was 11 months old. She can walk and talk and read, yet is incapable of tidying up, putting her clothes away or brushing her hair - any idea when these skills start to develop?

Cathster · 07/12/2016 07:50

I hadn't either - as the other babies I know that are my DDs age are remarkably similar to her in terms of language so I certainly didn't think she was behind at all. I guarantee there is something your 1 year old is doing instead of all those words.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 07/12/2016 07:52

laundry it happens v quickly when it happens.

Mine said nothing except ARGHHHHHH at 12m. Maybe the occasional inconsistent dada. She is still average at 17m, says consistently 12 words. I wouldn't worry!

Op, you won't know if you're raising a genius until later. Sounds within the range of normal albeit the top of the range!

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 07/12/2016 07:54

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter what they can do and when.

My DS knew all of his phonic sounds at 14 months. He could talk fluently at 18 months. People used to stop us in shops because they couldn't believe his language. He is still very bright but just a normal child with plenty of weirdness of his own.

dailymaillazyjournos · 07/12/2016 21:48

DGD is 15 months.

She can say Mama and Dada and everything/everyone else is either "Ba*, "Beh" or 'Behbeh'. She can shake her head to indicate 'no' (a lot!) and point to whatever she wants.

The important thing is that she can understand a heck of a lot. She knows where her head, mouth, ears, tummy, legs etc are and will point when asked and can point out loads of pictures in her books if you ask her where the duck/dog/baby/worm/bat etc are.

As PPs have said, they are all soooo different.

BackforGood · 07/12/2016 21:51

GrumpyDullard - when they are about 20 Wink

GrumpyDullard · 08/12/2016 07:31

Thanks, BackforGood. I look forward to that!
