Potty training holding wee for hours and hours... and hours...

Ds is 2.8 months old and we have been potty training him 6 days.

This is the second attempt to train him, we tried when he was just 2 as he was showing the signs - saying when he had pooed showing interest in toilets etc. However we stopped after a short while as he would not sit on potty for any bribe/treat/chocolate button/to read a story etc etc.

We tried again when he was 2.6 and he was really angry about the suggestion that he should use potty (I also have a childs toilet seat which he refused too saying it is dirty!). Kicking his potty saying I use nappies not toilets/potty etc.

We started again last Friday and it actually seemed to be going well. He weed lots of times in the first day on the floor but voluntarily sat on his potty the moment afterwards. Lots of praise etc. Pooed in his potty that evening. Saturday nothing lots of accidents. Sunday accidents but wee in potty at night. Monday only accidents as was Tuesday.

Main problem is that now he is holding his wee for hours. From 6.00pm until around 9am in the morning, but then refusing to let it go then screaming as it must hurt him, and telling us he is holding it in. He will sit on his potty if bribed and encouraged but nothing will come out! He will then suddenly need to go screaming but always in his trousers even if he has sat on the potty 2 mins before.

Has anyone else had this and if so what did you do about it? Is this something that will pass? I really don't want to put him back in nappies as I think exactly the same will happen again if we try him in a few months time. Also new baby coming in June so really want him at least only having a few accidents as opposed to weeing everywhere before then.

Any suggestions would be great. Potty training really is NO FUN at all.

It sounds possible that he's got a urine infection if it's hurting him to pass water (I think this is what you're saying). Is he showing any other signs, eg raised temperature?

This happened with my DS and it needed treated quickly so if there's any sign of illness I would immediately take him to the doctors.

If it's been going on for a few days and there's not other symptoms then he may well be fine, but it's worth having it checked out.

Keep us updated...

Hi makesachange. I'd not thought of that but I guess he could have. I'll make an appointment at the Docs and get it tested. Poor boy - just feel really sorry for him with it all. I'll let you know what happens.

Yes, please do. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Just want to say 'its exactly the same here!!!'

DS is 2.6. Today is day 2. Yesterday was good: 4 wees in potty then he was running around without pants while I bathed DS2, heard a squeal for mummy and ran only to find steaming great jobbie on armchair!! I rushed him to the bathroom and he finished off on the big loo. All v positive but then today he's just weeing eveywhere, screaming if I put him on the potty and jumping off the minute his bottom touches it! What do I do? Trying star chart but he's not a bit bothered whether he gets one or not. Have bribed him to sit on with promise of choccie still no go then with choc while sitting but eats it then jumps off! not v hygenic I know but willing to try anything!

I tried a few months ago but it all fell apart when he got chest infection so I gave in n went back to nappies. I wonder if that's the issue and subconsciously he thinks i'll eventually give up and leave him alone....

Don't know if we should stick at it and weather the river of pee or give up again.

I think that once the pants are on then that should be the end of nappies so I think if I were you i'd persevere but its easier to advise someone else than practise what I'm preaching.... what d u think for my situ?

Hi sunnyside it is SUCH hard work isn't it. I am going to stick it out but it is awful. If I was you I'd keep going and hope he gets better. Maybe keep his pants on so he feels them wet don't know if that would work??BTW poo on the armchair gets my full sympathy . DS did one in his pants in the STREET on Tuesday which I had to deal with - gross.

Mother in Law had ds today while I was at work and when I got there today she said she had the most stressful day ever. Basically he is still holding in his wee, today from 7.30am to 4.30pm!!!!Obv by this time he was so desperate and was beside himself all afternoon - think I would have been too! We decided we don't think he has an infection as he's not ill anywhere else and his wee when he did it (half went in the potty as there was so much!) was very clear not cloudy. He just doesn't seem to like letting go of it. Has anyone else had this at all and how did you get them to let go?

well it is one of the signs of being ready to pt, being able to hold the pee in, though it is the mood they get into whilst doing this that is so hard to deal with

my dd did this, it was easter time when I started to pt I think, she could hold her pee from bed until 2pm the next day, she just got there in the end, no bribery worked

sorry that is not useful advice... I too will be pt soon, my ds is 2.9, I haven't even tried, he has showed few signs of being ready but I just need to try it and see

good luck

gegs73 · 16/02/2007 09:23

Thanks Aefondkiss, that makes me feel alot better. Everyone looks at me like I'm mad when I say how long he holds it, I've not heard of anyone elses child doing it! Glad your dd got there in the end Good luck with ds.

DD did this too I am telling you she must have a bladder of iron to hold on the way she did, even now she goes less in a day than I do.
I have tobe truthful thogh When dd was holding on like that I kind of forced the wee out with loads of juice so she had no option other than to pee. I did get a few puddles on the floor but once she was actually peeing she became less frightened for want of a better world to actually let go and do it and we managed to get on with the potty training.
