Arrggh! Taking off nappy in the night.....

Ds1 (2.6) has been out of day nappies for about a month, doing pretty well but not perfect (mostly I think due to a desire to be contrary!) A couple of times now he has taken off his nappy at night and weed in the bed, then screamed for us to come in (actually I don't really know the sequence of events, whether he is waking up needing to wee or just happens to be awake and is taking off nappy due to boredom)....I consulted my potty training book and it says waking up for a wee and taking off nappy in the night are signs to give up night nappies.....but I know he is NOWHERE NEAR ready or capable of going through the night without a wee. If I tell him that its not ok to take his nappy off at night, and that its there for him to wee in, will I be setting up problems for later?
I'm really clueless about the whole night-time business, having assumed he'd be well over 3 before we got to that. I'm also really reluctant to start going in to him at the slightest whimper and seeing if he needs a wee - we do struggle to maintain reasonably uninterrupted nights as it is! HELP!!

Elliot, haven't experienced this exactly, but when dd1 was potty trained (at 2.3) she went day and night almost straight away. It seemed to confuse her that she was wearing a nappy at night but not in the day, and she was waking up and asking for the toilet at night, even when she had a nappy on. I didn't think she was ready for night, but she asked to be out of nappies at night and I gave it a go. After a couple of accidents (waterproof sheet indispensible) she got the knack. Perhaps your DS will surprise you and be ok in the night? If not, I suppose you can go back to pullups?(lots of children like wearing those at night).

Have you tried putting a potty in his bedroom just at night?? Would he possibly take his nappy off and use the potty?? The other thing is my ds went through a period of taking his nappy off in the night so I just put 2 disposable nappies on him. He'd take one off but still have one on. he went through this phase when he was 2 so was nowhere near ready to be in pants at night. He's nearly 3 now and still in nappies at night but only 1. He soon passed the phase of taking his nappy off.

do you use ordinary nappies at night? If so have you tried pullups they are actually quite difficult to get off.

Thanks for the thoughts. woodpops, a friend jokingly suggested 2 nappies - but I think he would probably be wise to that and just take them both off! Bloss, I do have reusables but have never used them at night - I suppose I could try - I've got velcro wraps though which would be easy to undo.
Are pullups absorbent enough for toddler wees? I think that would be worth a shot.
Last night he slept through without stirring, I think the nappy only comes off when his sleep is disturbed anyway. In the morning I he usually does his wee in the nappy, sometimes he holds on until we bring the potty through first thing...(but the nappy is always used, I guess he wees at other times during the night when he comes in to light sleep)

elliott my dd has done this a couple of times lately and I have started putting her to bed in a nappy with a pair of cotton knickers over the top which are hard to get off. They are just the matching ones that come with Gap dresses but I'm sure you could buy some elsewhere on their own. It has worked!

I would get cotton poplin as opposed to t-shirt material IYKWIM as they are much harder to remove.

My dd did this the other morning (20 mths) and then did a poo... aagghhhh!

Very unpleasant, thankfully she sat in one place though. She takes her nappy off if she doesn't have her pj bottoms on. I have a cute nightdress for her but it is too dangerous for her to wear it.

Think I may try the pants on top option.

CD, yes, I think that might work!!
The poo incident yesterday was truly awful...as ds reported to dh later on, 'mummy rinsed me off in the bath'
The thing is, I had leapt up to his room the instant I heard him call 'I want a wee-wee'! - its true, he did, but he had unfortunatly already covered himself with poo....
