Should a child in year 7, age 11 be responsible for packing their own school bag/p.e kit?

Yes, they should. I brought dd's PE kit in once and the school wouldn't take it! She had to take the detention. She never forgot again, so maybe they're into something...

Or on to, even...

Yes, they should. So long as somebody has shown them how to do it a few times and keeps an eye on them for the first few weeks. It wouldn't occur to me to bring anything to my 12yo as her school is right across town. She's had to learn to organise herself. Better to learn this and make mistakes now when the consequences are trivial, IMO.

Having said that, I do make the lunch boxes as it's quicker to do this for the whole family all at once. And we do insist on everything being packed the night before.

I helped for the first week or so, then he took responsibility for it. He does take every school book, mind you, just in case.

DS is in Y7. He is responsible for packing his school bag and sorting out his homework. We check with him before he goes to bed that he has sorted his bag. He sometimes asks us to check it but he is ultimately responsible for it. I have been pleasantly surprised by how organised he has been.

I tend to sort out his sports kit but that is because he uses it and brings it home most days. So it is usually still drying when he goes to bed. I will then pack it once ready. As they can do a number of sports in one day I put all his kit in the bag rather than sorting it. But again he is responsible for taking it into school.

School is over 20 miles away. I am not going to pop in with anything he has forgotten.

Yes. In fact my y6 10 year old also packs her own bag and is responsible for remembering PE kit etc. So I'm certainly not going to do it for the 12yo and the 14yo!

Stillwishihadabs · 12/11/2016 15:09

Ds is Yr8 now, I agree about giving them the tools to be organised. Notwithstanding mad dash around for PE shorts yesterday morning.

ChippyMinton · 12/11/2016 15:31

Mine have become well acquainted with the 15 minute quick wash cycle and the tumble dryer for when their PE fails the sniff test the night before or they've run out of shirts because they haven't put their dirty laundry in the wash basket.

Hi
I have three ( now) teens and I teached them in primary school to pack their school bags and personal kit. That was from Y4.If they forgot somthing I was always getting it for them but When they reached Y6 I refused. No more stressing coming from work just to get their stuff. When they got to secondary school I told them don't text/ call me you forget something because I won't come. They learn their lessons when they get detention for forgetting. Now they are well my son start college and girls are Y11 and Y 9. Never forget since Y7 anything. I keep telling them if you remember password on YouTube or whatever they are on they should remember their school stuff!
