Toilet accidents in public - the etiquette

We are toilet training DD just now and are only three days in so we have so far stayed pretty close to home. Provided things go well over the next week then we will carry on and start to try and resume normal activities and going out and about.

My question is, how do we handle toilet accidents in public? For example, if in a cafe or a shop and your child does a wee on the floor what do you do? Do you carry towels or kitchen roll or something with you at all times to mop it up? Do you just tell a member of staff at the premises and leave it to them? Obviously you have to get your child changed out of the wet clothes asap too. I'm getting a bit stressed trying to work out how much stuff we have to lug around with us every time we go out and how to deal with accidents in public so that I can prioritise DD but not piss off everyone around us. I also have a 4 mo DS to think of too so if we are all out together I can imagine this getting a bit stressful. Any thoughts / experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

thanks for the helpful advice here. Good tip about the training pants Shemozzle - I will have a look at some of them.

Try not to worry too muuch, we had very few accidents once ds1 got the hang of using the potty, and none were puddles. I would second the advice of a portable potty, just gives you more chance of not having an accident when they suddenly need a wee NOW and the nearest toilet is miles away. Obviously I wouldn't whip it out in a cafe but can usually find somewhere discrete pretty quickly. Ours now lives in the car as we're mostly past the accident stage but still have the occasional urgent wee.

I used to carry an emergency bag for those first few weeks after training.
A small towel or old teatowel (it was summer and they were in knickers and a dress so we could of had puddles), wipes for cleaning up child, spare clothes. Also went to more outdoor places.

Both of my DDs had maybe one or two accidents when we were out and about it just doesn't happen much, as other have said you are being proactive and reminding them and taking them to the loo more frequently. Just watch out if they have a lot of juice, that seems to be an issue with one of mine.

When you are out and about in shops or cafes it's completely manageable- just go to the loo as soon as you arrive and then again before you leave.

Play parks are more problematic- buy a Potette - best £12.99 I ever spent.

I would avoid pull ups / travel pants unless absolutely critical (trying to think - attending a wedding, perhaps? Something like that where an accident would be majorly disruptive), as you want them to learn that when they get that funny feeling, if they don't get to a toilet in time they get wet and that isn't nice.

Puddles are rare, so it's more about taking a change of clothes, thinking carefully about what you put them in initially, and being persistent about trying to use the toilet whenever the opportunity arises.

Take a towel in case of accidents in the buggy / car seat...
