use white wine vinegar? Found a bottle in the cupboard that has been there for years and wondered if it would do?

Yes. It's only white vinegar that you can use, AFAIK. The other kinds are for eating (apple vinegar, balsamic vinegar, etc.). I have found that you need quite a lot of white vinegar for the wash, but that could be because the water here is extremely hard.

Yes, it will be fine. Try smaller amounts first though and build up from there if you need more as too much will leave a residue which would a) smell and b) irritate skin.

Can't you use distilled malt vinegar? That's white.......and it's what I HAVE been using if it's not!

I always use ordinary malt vinegar on the basis that it's one of the cheapest! Works fine for me.

I use distilled malt vinegar. I find that any residual vinegar smell evaporates as things dry , especially if I line dry (although no hope of that at the moment!)
