Do real nappies ever fit newborn's? And muslin advice please

I'm due anyday now and have some size one fluffles that I would like to use on LO when he/she arrives but from what people are saying on some of the threads I'm a bit concerned that they will be too big for them for quite a while.

Obviously it will depend on how big the baby is and I do have standby pampers and muslins but wanted to know if anyone had ever been able to use real nappies from day one. If not when is the earliest that anyone has been able to start with them?

Also is it right that with muslins that you just use those, a wrap and a nappy nippa? And how many muslins would you get in for this?

Sorry for lots of questions in one, thanks for any advice!!!

Yes I used from day one - they were huge but didn't seem to be a problem for lo!

I've used Motherease one-size on my dd2 since she was 10 days old. She weighed 3 kilos at birth. I was going to wait till she was 2 or 3 weeks old like her sister was but after having to change her stupid disposables and all her bedding and clothes 3 times in one hour in the middle of the night because the pee just ran straight out I just grabbed the nearest cloth nappy gratefully and put it on her. I remembered them being enormous on dd1 but they didnt look so big on dd2. You can always 'stuff' it a bit with a bit of old towel or something so its in contact with her bum and fits snug.
I've occasionally used a muslin on a small baby. Just sort of wrapped it round in the traditional terry square way with a fleece liner inside and put wrap on top. Aren't nappy nippers only for terries?

PrettyCandles · 10/02/2007 16:22

IME nappy nippers can snag muslins, they work far better on terries. But depending on what wraps you've got, you could use the muslin as a prefold and not fix it in place with anything. Newborns don't move around much!

I have used tots bots size 1 on gecko from the beginning, they fit and work well, she just has a cute big bum.

I've used fluffles with ds from about day 4, he had a huge bum but they fit well, if you have the nippa ones rather than aplix then you can get then really nice and snug. Big bum didn't bother him and at 4 weeks now he doesn't look quite so daft.

Thanks for all the advice.. and so quick!!!!

I must say I feel relieved as this means I can hopefully use them from day one - which I really wanted to do so that I don't get sucked into disposables.

Can I add another cheeky question please?! With disposable liners do you cut them to size or fold the excess inside or outside of the nappy/ wrap?

Can you tell that I am a real nappy virgin yet??!!!

have a play with liners I think. I folded them but found they tended to miss the poo and got stuck to his willy when wet so changed to fleece, much nicer, keep him drier and better on containment. Much of it is playing around to see what works for your child's build and wee/poo habits.

Was a nappy virgin, now have fingers that keep 'slipping' and buying new and exciting cut nappies to play with! God help my bank balance in 6 months or so when it comes to getting th next size up.

cute nappies

alfiesmum · 10/02/2007 20:19

I don't use liners with my fluffles, the fleece lining keeps their bums nice and dry and newborn poo soaks right into the nappy.

bristols · 10/02/2007 21:06

I don't use liners with the fluffles either. I have to say that they did leak with DS at the very beginning as I just couldn't get them tight enough around his little legs. However I had the aplix fastener which, reading Indith's thread might have made a difference. Good luck!

Did have some explosions too bristols, a`little bit of fat on the legs makes such a difference doesn't it!
