Child too heavy to lift into bath

This might sound like an odd question but how would I get my 4 year old into the bath if I couldn't lift her? She's getting too heavy for me to lift and I have quite a deep bath. I can obviously put a step on the outside, but what of the inside? Would a grab rail suffice? I use a bath mat so she doesn't slip in the bath but I'm worried she just isn't tall enough to lift her leg up and over the side to get back out.

I'd recheck her weight, you probably mean 30lbs.

lljkk · 26/10/2016 21:46

30 lbs would be quite low for a 4yo, though

wonder if OP will be back

SisterViktorine · 26/10/2016 21:46

Lord above- 4, nearly 5st and not only not able to get into the bath by herself but you are also questioning whether an aide could take her weight.

How does she go on with climbing frames at the park etc? Is she generally agile?

My DS is not yet 30kg and he is 130cm at 6yo. He's taller that all his peers and well built enough for me to not let him eat biscuits. He was in Reception as soon as he turned 4 and expected to be very independent in many ways. I can't imaging having been still helping him get into the bath.

Maybe you need to;
think about her weight
get her to the park and soft play every day to improve her agility- maybe just go and find gates to climb?
start making sure she is independent

Apologies if there are SN involved- that would make it completely different of course.

30kg ShockHmm

That's half my weight Shock and more than my 7 year old!

We have a step and the kids can step in and I help them. Ds (7) can get in himself.

EmmaMacGill · 26/10/2016 21:53

30kg is quite heavy for a child that age, I'm not suprised you can't lift her . Is she tall for her age? Does she have problems with her mobility?

user1477282676 · 26/10/2016 21:55

Are you disabled? I ask because most fit parents could lift a 4 year old. I'm 44 and can still lift my 12 year old.

SavoyCabbage · 26/10/2016 22:00

My dd was 12 when she was 30kg. I remember because she had to be weighed at the doctors every year to see when she needed an adult epipen rather than an epipen junior.

hazeyjane · 26/10/2016 22:02

My ds is disabled, and although mobile,is unable to get into the bath by himself, he climbs onto a step and sit on the edge with me holding him, then swings his legs around and I help ease him onto a specialist bath seat. I can lift him, but am trying to save my (already knackered) back.

He is 6 - 18 kg and 105cm tall

This thread is most enjoyable.

My son's 25kgs and he's 7....have you got that right??

Anyway, I have similar problems, ie very bad back problems.
My kids only get a bath when dh is at home, otherwise its showers.
Wrt bath time, they clamber in and out fine.
Not slipping is the important bit.

carmenta · 26/10/2016 22:07

My very short nearly-three year old has been able to get in and out of our bath for six months, with a small step stool (the kind for potty training on the loo) on the outside. I just hold her hand while she does it, but no lifting.

minipie · 26/10/2016 22:08

OP must mean 30lb surely.

We use a step - must admit I can't remember exactly how DD uses it but she gets in and out by herself somehow

KayJBee · 26/10/2016 22:09

My heavy 4 yr old is only 22kg, he's pretty heavy compared to most of his friends. My 7 yr old is 21kg and my 9 yr old about 24kg. Are you sure she is really 30kg?
My 4 yr old has been getting himself in and out of the bath for quite a long time. Before he did it himself, we used to hold both his hands and he stepped up on to the edge of the bath, then stepped down. Reverse to get out but instead of step down, he liked to jump with us still holding both his hands.

PandasRock · 26/10/2016 22:10

I have a very deep bath and a 4 year old (who weighs about 17kg, and is pretty sturdy - did you really mean 30kg? That's a lot more than my 9 year old weighs!). Generally, I lift him in and out. My nine year old can just about manage to step in/out without difficulty - it's a really deep bath!

Bedsheets4knickers · 26/10/2016 22:10

My 4 year olds climbs in with a plastic step x

BusStopBetty · 26/10/2016 22:20

Can't be 30lb. Unless the child is under a metre tall they'd be underweight.

Actually we only had issues getting out. Helping was preferable to dc clambering up onto the side using the screen and leaping off.

Pythonesque · 26/10/2016 22:22

I can't remember the practicalities of my children getting in and out of the bath at that age; but just had a look back since they are tall and were pretty heavy when they were younger. Both were 21 kg at around 3 1/2, which was heavier than an "average" 6 yr old. However neither would have been 30 kg till age 7 or 8 I think.

So to the OP, unless this weight is just an estimate and off a bit, I'd suggest having a chat with your health visitor or GP or someone as well as following up some of the excellent suggestions around steps and sitting on the side of the bath etc. Hope things go well for you both!

TheDuchessOfKidderminster · 26/10/2016 22:25

I'm assuming the OP meant 30lbs which is about what my 4yo weighs. He just climbs in/out if the bath himself biw but did use a stepping stool for a while when he was younger.

TheDuchessOfKidderminster · 26/10/2016 22:27

My DS is about a metre tall and just over 30lbs. He's a little in the small side but not 'underweight'.

EvansAndThePrince · 26/10/2016 22:28

30lb would be the lower end of average for a 4yo while 30kg would be the higher end of average for a 9yo.... I have to assume you mean pounds.

TheDuchessOfKidderminster · 26/10/2016 22:34

Yes, 30lbs is within the expected range for that age (at the lower end).

Doublethecuddles · 26/10/2016 22:34

Is it possible to shower her?

MyWineTime · 26/10/2016 22:34

I'm sure the weight must be an error.
Are there any special needs here - you or your child?
It really shouldn't be difficult for her to be able to swing her leg over the side of the bath onto a step.

mummyofmoomoos · 26/10/2016 22:38

Hold on- I also have a son- four tomorrow- who weighs nearly 30k- and I find it hard to help him too- he's the same height as my 5 year old and is a very active child. We put a folder towel over the edge of the bath, sit the toilet step up against it, encourage him to get one leg out over the soft towel then hold him under armpits and take most of the weight as he gets his other leg over- he's a right chunk!

Stormwhale · 26/10/2016 22:43

30kg can't be right. If it is right you have bigger problems than whether you can get your child in and out of the bath. Good God.
