We went yesterday for my DS's 10 months assessment ( he will be 1 year old soon actually, that's how well they do their job). We were talking about food and my DS's diet. So, she said that we should give him everything we eat, even if it has added salt or sugar in it. We do BLW and he does eat most of the times the same as us, but it's baby friendly, no salt, no sugar. I was gobsmacked when the HV said that I can give to an almost 1 year old cake and custard, stuff that are full of sugar. I thought NHS is trying to reduce the sugar intake.

Of course it's ok to give cake and custard to a toddler.
No one survives on quinoa alone.

Heath visitors are health professionals.
The have trained for 3 years in nursing many have paediatric nursing and /or midwifery qualification. So 5 years study plus several years in practice.
They then undertake a BSc(Hons) in community specialist practice /public health.
Most of their work load is in child protection/safeguarding work and his highly challenging and stressful.
Sadly successive governments have increased the contact HV have with 'core' families.
The depth and diversity of knowledge base and core skills HV s are expected to have is huge.
At the end of the day it is 'advice' and you either take it or you ignore it.
HVs have a challenging job think we can cut them some slack
(Not Hv BTW but have worked with them in a previous role ).

Especially if you make the custard and use half the sugar the tub says! (How I've always done it.)
