ds will do it on the toilet or potty but the penis doesnt get down wards , if you know what i mean, and it goes on the seat (potty) or over the top of the potty.

so do i have to psuh it down or get him?

total dah brain here.

Sounds like he's sitting. How old is he? Can he do it standing up (on a step?). Then it will automatically point downwards.

danceswithnewboots · 07/02/2007 19:34

OH I am so glad someone started this thread! Ds has just started showing a bit of interest in the potty but when we sit him on it we can't get his willy down at the front bit because there isn't room! Was beginning to worry he had inherited an enormous backside from his mother

ejt1764 · 07/02/2007 19:37

We had this problem with ds - we decided to get a throne type potty that you can lift the bowl out of, as it gave a bit more room around the front ...

also, we reminded ds every time he went near the potty that his willy had to point down - he soon got the hang of it.

good luck!

cedar12 · 07/02/2007 19:38

My sil taught her ds to poke it down the toilet himself, but he stands up now so not a problem.

Mercy · 07/02/2007 19:39

hermykne, I will be watching this thread with interest!

How old is your ds?

chocolatebirdy · 07/02/2007 19:39

Why cant they just make pottys to fit willys! Surley its not that hard?!

clairemow · 07/02/2007 19:41

My DS forgets to poke it down all the time! I remind him every time, and often push it down myself (don't think there's anything wrong with that) but often he's already started and pees on his trousers and pants. So he now stands on his step when we're upstairs near the loo, and I remind him when we're downstairs near the potty.

At his nursery, they call it "overspray". LOL. He oversprays quite a bit, and I keep asking them to let him stand to wee, but they keep forgetting....

clairemow · 07/02/2007 19:42

my potty has a higher bit one side and a lower bit the other, girls are meant to sit with the lower bit to the front, and boys with the higher bit to the front. However, DS refused to use it that way round...

hermykne · 07/02/2007 19:50

he is 2 and half
just happened that tonight he soaked himself , i put him in his dressing gown til i was ready to change him, then he annouced he needed to go, put him on potty and he did, then 20mins later, he needed to go again, on toilet.
the potty just seemed a bit neat and the toilet he needed to push it down...

so its normal opbviously.

thrown potty? EJT whats that or where did you get it?

I can often be seen actually holding ds's willy down when we are out, he is perched on a toilet and I just can't be ar$ed to deal with any overspray....

Tommy · 07/02/2007 19:58

when the Ds were using a potty, I always held it down - how else are they going to know that they have to do it?

DS1 stands up now and I ofetn have to say to him - "point it at the water!" - otherwise we'd have wee everywhere.

They are little men after all

Chandra · 07/02/2007 20:03

I got one for mothercare that was a bit bigger, it was like a throne before that it was like sitting him on a cup...

How old is he? don't be tempted to make him stand up until he is able to concentrate, because there would be wee all around the place.

Chandra · 07/02/2007 20:05

at "point it at the water". That's my favourite phrase.

Actually, DH told me that when he was a child there were some toilets that came with a drawing of a fly so men and children pointed at it and keep the toilet clean. I have been toying with the idea of improvising with something of the sort

bran · 07/02/2007 20:08

I bought a loo seat from John Lewis that goes under the regular loo seat and has quite a high front, it's not perfect but it's better than the one I had before that went on top of the loo seat. I also bought him a Baby Bjorn potty that has a really high splash guard at that front, but he prefers to sit on the loo anyway as he never sees sitting on the potty.

ejt1764 · 07/02/2007 20:09

You can also put a bit of food colouring in the bottom of the potty - and challenge them to see what colour it goes ...

example of throne potty here

Or just use a marker pen on the toilet bowl and get them to aim at that. Or a ping pong ball (I'm told).

Lizzylou · 07/02/2007 20:11

DH had the idea of putting food colouring in the toilet bowl as he'd heard that that made children more inclined to use it (why do we potty train during the terrible twos when they use peeing and worse as a weapon??!)....we now have a yellow downstairs loo! (only colour we had in!)

I've heard of people putting a ping pong ball in the bowl and getting boys to aim at it...will try that once DS1 is standing to pee!

Lizzylou · 07/02/2007 20:12

OK, OK, am very slow at typing tonight!
