reusables - birth to potty? or newborn size followed by bigger size?

Am going to go reusables with next baby after creating a mound of landfill with last...

A couple of friends who have tried reusables and then given up say they've found them too bulky on their small baby.

I get the impression that whilst one birth to potty size nappy is good for budget, that it can mean a lot of bulk in the early days.

Is it better to get two lots of nappies - one for smaller baby and one for bigger, or can the 'birth to potty' option work?

Thanks
ps anyone used Kissaluv's? Any good?

I'm a 2 size person. I love diddy diapers (dd2 only just grown out of size 1s at 7 months) and bimbles. Birth to potty nappies have drowned all my babies - they've all been 7lbs something.
Or else do muslins or terries until the birth to potty option fits a bit better. Kissaluvs never seemed to suit my babies, but they looked lovely!

I'm hoping to do the muslin thing and then birth to potty, tho a friend is lending me some bimbles too. All the BTP nappies I have still fit DS at 3 yrs so I am sure they will get some use made of them but as he was under 7lbs, there's no way they'll fit him from the get-go.

I am also hoping someone will buy me some bamboo terries - I have one and they are very slim and easy to use and make good boosters too. From what friends have said the difficulty with early nappies is that they get through so many, so anything that takes a long time to dry is abit of a waste of time.

I've bought one Kissy which I am hoping will be the baby's first ever nappy (so I can keep it), they are incredibly cute

IMO the only slim one size nappies are the motherease one size and I like the Wonderoos pocket nappies, the Wonderoos can have a tendency to leak from the legs though on slim babies where as the Motherease would be used with the appropriate sized wrap so the tendecy for leakage would be reduced. I think your friends may have just been finding cloth bulky in comparisson to disposables, and they almost universaly are, however I can't really see why that should put people off using them, clothes can be a bit tricky, however in the early days most items of clothing are very stretchy and later on I just buy one size larger than I would if using disposables. I would say it is probably worth buying one of a few different types of nappy as you will prob find that different nappies suit different uses e.g. an all in one or a pocket nappy for when you are out and about meaning you have less to carry and changes are quicker, maybe a bamboo or thick cotton nappy for night time use, etc

I prefer 'sized' nappies as well. In other words newborn/small when they are little and then into a medium or large at 5 or 6 months.
We started out with prefolds and cottonbottoms wraps, in newborn size, with a nappi nippa to fasten. They were very neat.
Birth to potty nappies are a bit of a misnomer in my opinion, because they are seldom suitable from birth, so you will end up buying something small anyway. Also these days a lot of babies are potty training at almost three and a lot of the birth to potty nappies - particularly Mother-ease are often outgrown in the height and frequently not sufficiently absorbent for an older baby.
Don't forget you can sell your small nappies and use the proceeds to buy your size 2 or large nappies.
But definately get some little nappies, just for the fun of it. Size 0 Kissaluv, newborn cuddlebuns, newborn poochies, or xs Sandy's are all nice.

i used sized nappies. they are better for containment aswell. although i did use some size 2 nappies from the off and just folded them down and used a nippa instead of the aplix on them.

newborns are tiny for cloths.I used disposables for first two weeks. My dd is 5 months now,& cloths fit her really well,so no leaks.
