How old were your DC when you stopped wiping their bottom for them?

Interested to know as I think DS should do it himself (he's 4.8, but don't want to make him if no-one else does! Thanks

Probably about that age. I started to insist on him wiping and me "checking". He still asks me to check him now occasionally (he's 5.5) and last night he was very tired and as a "special treat" he declared that I could wipe - lucky me. I'm interested to read other experiences, though. DS started school when he had just turned 4, but I think their bodies quickly learn not to do a poo there.

my ds was 5 when he stopped sticking his bottom in my face after a trip to the loo. However....if it is really messy I still get the odd request for assistance.

Incidentally dd who is 2 insists on doing her own!!!!

dollybird · 05/02/2007 14:49

He does it on his own at school (if he needs to - like you say, Azure, I think they try and hang on till hometime). I think he's ok as they have small toilets where his feet touch the ground - I don't want too much more this summer of him shouting at the top of his voice "can you wipe my bum please" so all the neighbours can hear

Errrr ... I'm still wiping ds2's bottom and he's 6.5 I have now got him to have a go himself first and then I check. He has always had problems going to the loo - used to go 4 or 5 times a day and then not for ages (wheat free diet now has helped), so I think that has made him a bit worried about wiping.
I think ds1 was about 5.5 when he stopped asking .. well that delightful shout of "I've finished!".
Dd1 insists on wiping her own bottom and she's was 3 the other week.

Notquitesotiredmum · 05/02/2007 14:51

Agree about the school thing - pooing at home is much safer. I think my ds was about 5.5 when we stopped. I was wondering if we would ever, then all of a sudden it fell off the agenda. We had a friend nearby whose son was a bit later than us!!

dollybird · 05/02/2007 21:37

Asked DS today if he would start doing it himself - he said 'but I can't reach the tissue'!? Got him to try later so will start getting him to do it first then I help/check.

On a similar note - do you wipe dd's when she's had a wee - I usually do but fear I'll be doing that till she's 5 too!

Glad to hear DS is normal - was beginning to think it a bit weird. We insist he does his own most of the time (5.6) but he's not always very effective....

colditz · 05/02/2007 21:49

Well, ds1 does his own at 3.9, but his poo isn't sloppy. whenever it is, I have to help him.

sorkycake · 05/02/2007 21:50

3, but I do ask him if he's clean and he shows me, if he's not I give him a hand. Dd was independent from the off.

stitch · 05/02/2007 21:51

5.6 and i still wwipe his bottom clean.
with ds1 i let him do it himself at a much earlier age, but we kept getting skid marks, so i took over gain for a while..

redbeki · 06/02/2007 13:15

If you think you've had enough, then the time is right.he seems like he's old enough to do it,think mine were younger.like with potty training timing is crucial.do it too early and its hard,do it too late & even harder. If you dont insist, you'll still be wiping his bum when he's seven.

TooTicky · 06/02/2007 13:21

My ds1 is 7. It is only relatively recently that we have almost got him independent in this area. He still likes to be checked. And because we had such problems with ds1, we just automatically wipe ds2 (5). But this will be changing!! Dd1 on the other hand was independent from the age of 3. And dd2 (19m) would happily wipe her brothers' bottoms

Piffle · 06/02/2007 13:24

Still made sure I wiped ds's after he started school (he was 5) as he did such a half job of it himself.
So I gave him a good wipe/flannel wash every night.
I think I must have stopped when he was 6-7
Although aged 13 I still note on washing day, that he still does half a job
