9 week old with wind/colic

I have a 9 week old who fairly regularly 2 hours after feeding screams the place down, legs go up and generally is really distressed. It doesn't happen all the time, there is no obvious pattern to it and it's really driving me insane. I wind him as much as I can after feeding but it doesn't seem to be working. I have him on colief in case its the lactose in the milk or in case its colic. Can anyone offer any advice or has anyone been through something similar????

Went through the same thing with DD at about the same age - it lasted til she was about 12 weeks. Tried everything - Infacol; colief; tummy massage; cranial osteopathy

I think you should see your gp/hv just to check it's not reflux. I thought lactose intolerance usually manifested itself in actual vomiting but could be wrong. If it is diagnosed as 'colic' (whatever that is!) then really the best advice is just to think of it as a phase that he will grow out of; get as much help as you can so that you don't suffer too much from lack of sleep and book a weekend away for you all as soon as he grows out of it (can def. recommend Luxury Family hotels!).

Good luck

my bf son constantly had colic (against the odds) and the only thing that would shift it was good old fashioned gripe water. I have never heard anything so small fart so much!

unfortunately, gripewater always made my two sick but definitely worth a try

i had this with both my babies and tried allsorts and didn't really find that anythng made much of a difference but donlt fear they both grew out of it at around 11 weeks so you haven't long to go

although with my dd we had a rocking chair for her to sit in and this did seem to help get her of to sleep and helped get her wind up

I tried everything and in the end it was one tablet of homeopathy that cured it in less than 5 seconds never to return! It was incredibly bizarre. The first homeopathic stuff did nothing but the second attempt was the cure. Its well worth a go.

DD2 is now 5 months and still suffers from wind but when she was little she was really bad - exactly how you're describing. We tried colief but it was such a faff as I was (and still am) bf so couldn't just add it to her bottle. We took her to a cranial osteopath and it may have been coincidence, but the legs up, screaming an hour or so after a feed stopped. I find DD is a really quick feeder and I think she just wolfs it down so fast she then gets wind. Best way I found to get the wind up is just to sit her upright on my knee. She's now having some food and I can honestly say it's not made any difference to her wind but at least she's not AS reliant on the milk.

Agree with checking not reflux though - think you can give them gaviscon if it is. Have you asked the health visitor?

sassy71 · 03/02/2007 11:24

Thanks everyone for your input. The health visitor just says its colic/wind and he will grow out of it! Easy to say but not so easy to deal with when its your child!!! Have got him on Infacol, which we used for DS1 and seemed to work! We shall see! Just finding it hard to deal with what feels like an unhappy baby at moment as he is always crying, but will see what doc says about reflux and maybe think about cranial osteopath if it doesn't clear up by time he is 3 months old.

Good luck! I know what you mean about the unhappy baby thing; it's hard. Do make sure that you're looking after yourself AND being looked after too!

The best advice I was given was to give DS some cool boiled water from a bottle. Only a little bit and it helps any trapped gas shoot through their systems. Also, with all that crying they get thirsty. I know I did!

Colief and Infacol helped initially, but not for long. Holding our boy upright trying to burp him for hours at a time was all we could do. My husband jiggled him for 5 months!

I found it really hard. DS was rigid all day long and slept for between 20 minutes to perhaps an hour and a half (in total) during the day. The rest of the time he mostly cried. He cried, I cried.

If my next baby has colic, I'll call everyone and anyone and just ask them to take the baby for an hour.

Having had such a horrible start bad days now (DS is 16 months) are a piece of cake. Good luck. It will pass.
