My husband reckons that he's read about baby's being potty trained at less than 12 months. I've said that that isn't possible and an ongoing argument has ensued. To settle the argument can you lovely ladies tell me at what age you LO's were potty trained at.

Thanks.

No idea - dd only 9 months - but suggest if dh thinks baby is ready, then HE take control and do it. He'll soon work out some more realistic expectations!

Thanks WriggleJiggle. He reckons he read that baby's in third world country's do it far earlier than baby's over here.

some families choose never to use nappies, but practice elimination communication

I don't see how you can look out for signs in a baby up to the age of 5/6 months when they are going to the toilet when they're asleep????

I think its more "parent training" when they are that young, learning when they go and sitting them on the potty in time! Not really child learning!

There was an article in Junior mag about potty training before 12m .. they have groups for this type of thing in America, probs New York. I saw something about it on tv aswell .. can't remember what.
Two mothers that i know of potty trained their dds before 12m, successfully.

I think it must be a total lifestyle choice though, as ud have to be totally committed to it with such a young child..... but great for those who can do it!

it is a lifestyle choice...usually attachment parenting, .....

When I visited China I noticed that babies didn't usually wear nappies and toddlers wore open-crotch trousers with nothing underneath. (I even saw one woman holding her baby suspended over a bin in a public park!) I was told that they start "potty training" at 1 month and most babies are pretty much trained by 12 months. The crotchless trousers are to enable them to squat whenever they feel the need, without worrying about having to remove clothing to do it.

It's true that the Elimination Communication approach is practised in a lot of Asian and African societies.

My DD is 5 months old and I've been sitting her on the potty at every nappy change (except middle-of-the-night ones) since she was 6 weeks old. (She's going to nursery in a couple of months and hopefully I'll be able to get them to do it with her too.) It's not really EC, as she does wear nappies the rest of the time, but I'm hoping that it will nevertheless lead to early potty training, because it's getting her accustomed to peeing/pooing somewhere other than in her clothes, and hopefully helping her to recognise the sensations involved. She produces something more often than not, and I think we're catching about 50% of her poos. If nothing else, it reduces the number and extent of pooey nappies I have to wash!
