Late Walkers

My daughter is 17 months tomorrow and is not yet walking. I'm not really worried myself as I was a late walker too. However all her peers -including her cousin who is 6 weeks younger - are walking! She is a bottom shuffler and crawls and clambers too. Saw the HV last week and she said if she's not walking by 19 mths to go back. Does anyone else out there have similar experience?

dd1 only walked at 17 months I think. she was a classic 'late walker, early talker'.

Good you're not really worried. it's perfectly normal.

Really common for bottom shufflers to walk later than children who don't. Especially if their parents took their first steps later than average.
Dd was 17 months when she finally took her first steps.
Your dd is clearly agile and mobile. The HV may want to check if a common, completely harmless condition called hypermobility is a factor. All this means is the child's joints are more flexible than the norm. This means it is harder for her pelvis and hips to stay in alignment for now.
I know two hypermobile children and it all came good by two. Both their HVs were carrying on as if they were never going to walk...
Hypermobility is often linked to musical ability and...great potential for acrobatics and gymnastics apparently!

dd1 was 17 months iirc

dd2 was 22 months

my friend's dd who was born 5 days before dd2 was walking at around 10 months and it was very strange (and upsetting) sometimes to see them together

try not to worry

It is disconcerting to have a well upholstered sea-slug of a dd stepped over by a dot of a 1-year-old isn't it oo

Hi wesey
My DS2 was a bottom shuffler and didn't walk until he was nearly 22 mths (thought I was going to pass out carrying him everwhere, he's a very heavy baby!). He wouldn't even bear weight on his legs until he was 18 mths old. Think it's perfectly normal for a bottom shuffler to take a bit longer to get up on their feet. Ds2 is a great talker though so another one of the late walkers, early talkers. Mention it to your HV in a couple of months if no progress as she suggests, but I think you're right not to be concerned at the moment. Hope this helps x

absolutely Marina

I used to go to the M&B group and everyone would ask is she walking about 300 times, grrrrrr

I have done a few threads wesey74 so for me to say don't worry is a bit rich

bakedpotato · 01/02/2007 10:45

both mine walked late, around 18mths.
they didn't bottom shuffle either, just commando crawled (when they could be ars*d).
Early talkers though, like aDad's DD.

funnypeculiar · 01/02/2007 10:56

DS didn't walk until 18 mths. Didn't bottom shuffle at all, only started crawling around 14 months. He too was a classic walk don't talk child - he saw no reason to move when he could sit in one place and tell US what he needed
He's 3 next week and completely normal. Well, as normal as a 3 y o can be...
It is horrid as your friend's babies all tear round and yours sits like a lemon - but bear in mind that early walking is no sign of anything developmentaly...(now early talking on the other hand ... )

wesey74 · 01/02/2007 11:02

You all make me feel so much better! Yes I agree early walking is no sign of intelligence where as early talking......! DD is a very good talker, much more advanced than her peers but it is disconcerting when she gets stepped over by a toddling fellow 17 month year old!
Thanks so much!

my brother walked at around 2yrs. GP was convinced he was disabled. My mother maintained he was just lazy. My mother was right.

mumblechum · 01/02/2007 12:44

My ds2 was 17 months and another early talker. He'd cruise round happily but just didn't have the confidence to go it alone. Glad you're feeling reassured now.

FatFikAndFugly · 01/02/2007 12:48

my dd was a very late walker (around the 2 mark) didn't crawl or bumshuffle.

I would say that now (she's 4.5yrs) she is just beginning to catch up with her gross motor skills.

They get there in there own time. I saw consultants and all sorts (because she wasn't getting around at all) but when she decided to walk she took to it well.

willandsamsmum · 01/02/2007 15:21

DS1 didn't walk until 28 months. We saw paediatricians, physios etc who all said that it was nothing physical, he just didn't want to do. When he finally did it, he never fell over, never ran into things and it was almost like he'd been studying people walking and putting it off until he knew he'd be able to do it without hurting himself. That and the fact that it was quicker for him to bum shuffle to whatever he wanted.
