Is anyone else that is doing an OU course keeping quite about it or did you tell freinds or did you tell the world?

I am doing considering doing a 10pt one, I don't want everyone asking how I am doing and MIL saying shouldn't you be stdying dear all the time. I will have plenty time to do it through the day so I might just not tell anyone.

I started mine very quietly and only when I did the Shakespeare last year did I tell anyone that I'd started. I talk about it more on here than in RL (except with my OU study buddy).

If you don't want to tell you don't need to... esp as a 10pt course won't take up much time.

What one are you thinking of doing?

nutcracker · 31/01/2007 13:14

I have applied to do a short course in March, but haven't told anyone except for people on here.

Stargazer · 31/01/2007 13:24

I don't think mine was ever a secret. I told my family - as I needed their support. A 10pt course won't take up too much time - but I bet you'll be bitten by the bug I completed my first degree with the OU in 1994 - I was single then and could do what I liked. I'm on my second degree now - started in 2003 when DD was a year and am in my fifth year - so everyone is used to mummy having her head buried in a book (albeit not always a chemistry book)!!

Ladies enjoy the courses. Now I really must get back to my books

I've never kept it quiet that I am studying but no one apart from dh, ou buddy and best mate ask how I'm going on, which does upset me a bit.

Which 10 point are you doing? I've done three, Da Vinci, Writing Essays and one I think was called Words and Music.

Skribble · 31/01/2007 13:32

I'm thinking about the Introducing Environment (Y161). I don't want the aded pressure of people constantly wanting to know how I am doing and expecting me to be studying all the time. Marslady and Nutcracker, what are your reasons for keeping quiet? Stargazer wow a second degree, you must really enjoy studying .

I know what you mean about being bit by the bug, I started one of the free units on Learningspace last night and I couldn't wait to do more today, I'm doing Reading Visual Images, its an introductory unit that they should take about 8hrs. I thought this would be good practise for the 10pointer which starts in March.

I am not sure which direction I want to take yet so I might rattle through a few of the free ones to see what subject I prefer studying. Because at the moment I keep looking at the OU courses and thinking oh i like that and that and that, and when it comes to parting with money I want to be heading in the right direction .

Skribble, have you checked if you are entitled to financial help? You can't getr itfor the 10 point courses but you can for the longer ones.

Skribble · 31/01/2007 13:39

No not eligible, in Scotland earnings have to be less than £15,000. DH's wage is higher but of course they don't take into account we are up to our ears in loans and mortgage.

Not sure why I am keeping quiet, possibly because I know people will expect me to give up half way through or something, or they will say 'well what are you doing that for'.

I'd just rather keep it to myself for now.

Skribble · 31/01/2007 14:02

Yes I am expecting the Why are you doing that? Perhaps I will tell after I finish the course and have something to prove I have a brain .

LOL, same here.

MarsLady · 31/01/2007 14:06

No particular reason. It's just something that I'm doing.

Actually... currently I can think of a reason to be quiet about it. Mums at school.... bleurghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! "ooh Mars how on earth are you managing to study with all those children? Ooh and now you're doula-ing as well! Oh I couldn't do it. Gosh.... blah blah blah blah blahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" Like it's my problem they can't organise their time.

Skribble · 31/01/2007 14:08

lol

LOL Mars

I think I just want something to do for me that no one else has an opinion on for once.
I always worry and care too much about what other people might think of stuff I do and so it's easier to keep my mouth shut.

Skribble · 31/01/2007 14:09

I think I want to prove to myself I can do it first rather than having to prove it to everybody else.

I might tell one freind as she has done OU before.

Skribble - I do like studying mad . And to be honest although most people know that I study - they don't all keep asking how it's going. However, I have to admit that I did tell everyone last year when I got two distinctions - but then I wanted to shout it from the rooftops - it was hard work.

Nutcracker - my father (who I no longer see or speak to) said to me when I started my first degree - I bet that doesn't last. I would love to have seen his face when my DS told him I got the degree - and then told him that I'd started on a second .

Stargazer · 31/01/2007 19:48

DS - was dear sister in previous message.
