How much does it cost to do buffet style food for about 20 adults and 15 children for a childs birthday party?

Depends on what your planning to serve.
Where your planning to buy it from.
Are you preparing it yourself? Or using a caterer?
If your preparing it yourself - write yourself a menu and then go online to which ever supermarket you will use and price it up.

If your using a caterer, email them.

A friend has offered to do it but I think what she has said it will cost is madness but then again I've never done the 'party' thing before... and planning on serving sandwiches, etc nothing special and getting the cake separate

You'll need to give us an idea of the things she's planning to provide and the cost before we can tell you how outrageous she is!

So you're catering for approximately 30 people. Will there be adult food and kids food or just all the same.
Agree we need to know more about what food you've decided on before we can give an opinion.

I've been to parties where sarnies were made with value ham and others where the ham is ££££ from a specialist butcher.

its all going to be the same no adult / kids selections and I'm presuming its going to be brought from asda

How old is the birthday child?

My Dd just turned 4. We had a tiny party. She had 6 friends. And adults stayed.
I did 2 pizzas (pizza express but were half price) some crisps, carrot and cucumber batons, mini tomatoes, houmous, babybels.
Juice in jugs and bottled water for kids.
Party rings and jammy dodgers for after.

Made enough so that adults could eat if they wanted to but mostly they didn't. Had almost a whole pizza left over.

I would guess I spent £20 ish.
But I made my own cake. So maybe £10/15 there.

Is my sons first birthday we are hiring a hall etc and have been told £100 for sandwiches etc

So about £3 pp? That doesn't sound ridiculous to me, but iId be expecting more than diluting juice and jam sandwiches

£100 for 35 people is only £3 a head, sounds reasonable to me
