5.5 week old - BF - hasn't pooed for 1.5 days ...

She normally poos 4 or 5 times every day. She's still having really wet nappies, is feeding happily (constantly ), and generally seems quite content. She does have a wee bit of a cold.

I know that BF babies can go days between poos, but I thought that was when they got older. Should I be (this) worried?

Hi - no - I remember my HV advising that 5-7 days was not unusual for a totally bf baby (so they would have to be under 3-6 months at least) Mine often saved them up for me for about 3 days and then demonstrated their love for me by shooting it across the room (by approximately 5 feet) whilst I turned around to get the sudocrem!!!

DD once went 14 days without pooing when she was 9 weeks. Boy, that was not fun when it came out! I changed her nappy and then she filled the next one as well!

I took her to dr's and hv but they felt her tummy and said not to worry as it wasn't hard so no blockage. If she hasn't gone after a week you might want to take her to see dr just in case but otherwise be on red alert for major shit storm

LOL, Evamum!

Thanks for the advice - I know I should trust my instincts, but you know ... no matter how many you have you still worry!

BF babies don't have as much to expel as they are getting exactly what they need. As long as the baby is having wet nappies, is feeding well and is happy I wouldn't worry.

My DS went through a phase at about the same age of pooing only once every 6 days. Each dirty nappy was epic, but he was feeding and weeing normally and neither doctor nor HV were worried. It was just a phase, lasted til he was about 3/4 months, but he was fine with it. Try not to worry!

amidaiwish · 30/01/2007 09:50

mine often went 2 weeks between poos from 4 weeks old.

dress them up in their best outfit, go somewhere with no nappy changing facilities then they will poo everywhere.... everytime

eviletc · 30/01/2007 09:54

don't worry, this is perfectly normal. my bf dd did go from being a "twice a week" girl to an "every single nappy being stinky and full" once she started on solids though so definitely beware......

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 30/01/2007 10:02

DD2 pooed when she was born, and then nothing for the next 2 weeks. I ended up having to take her to Addenbrookes hospital where they were going to administer an enema, but when they sent a porter off to get one she exploded! I think she knew what they were going to do and thought 'sod that, I may aswell do it myself' After that she wasn't particularly regular, but it is nothing to be too concerned at. As has been said, once they start experiencing a different range of foods, look out!

DimpledThighs · 30/01/2007 10:04

my ds went once a week when he was a tiny teeny breast fed baby.

sockmonkey · 30/01/2007 10:10

Both mine were BF and would sometimes go for a week between poos... and then did massive down the legs up the back ones. I think they like to store it up so then can make you run around shouting for more vests and wipes.

My DS did this and I was really worried. Spoke to the HV (I'm lucky and have a very good one) who explained that as they grow, they have less waste because they are absorbing nearly all of the milk, so their poo-ing becomes less frequent. Its a bit of a shocker when you've been used to poos in every nappy. As everyone else has said, be prepared for a nappy explosion!!
