WBBs *really* *smell* when DS wees in them

I am using Wbbs on my 18month old DS and have found that they are really smelling when he has weed in them. They dont smell when wet after being washed and I have been using small amount of washing powder and white vinegar.

Could it be his wee? Smells like a first wee in the morning (sorry if tmi!) but all day. DS drinks lots in the day and has plenty of wet nappies so dont think it is due to not drinking enough. Doesnt seem to be teething atm either.

Is that normal as he gets older or do you think something could be wrong? Perhaps it is the nappies? It doesnt seem as bad when he is in terries rather than wbbs.

I would suggest checking the rinse cycle for suds when you wash them, shaped nappies tend to hold onto detergent abit and if this is the case they can smell when wee'd on - it doesn't happen with terries cos they are one layer, no elastic so rinse well.

Also do you do a cold prewash? Hot water sets both smells and stains so it's a good idea to give them a prewash (or run them under the cold tap when you take them off) just to help shift urine.

That must sound like a load of hassle after using terries but it's not so bad, I just set prewash and occasionally do an extra rinse to make sure detergent isn't building up

I usually do a prewash and an extra rinse every wash. Not sure if it is a cold pre wash though. Are they all?

My washer is a triple A rated machine. Does that mean that they woulnt get so much rinsing?

I have had this problem from time to time. I've found that soaking the nappies in water with a few drops of tea tree oil helps. I do this for a couple of cycles and then go back to dry pailing.
What are Wbbs?? I thought I was an experienced nappy addict, but I've been racking my brains!
I do a cold rinse before the wash and then an extra rinse afterwards.

wambamboos (that's right isn't it?), I'm not sure whether all prewashes are cold or not, I do run DSs night nappies under the cold tap as they can lurk in the pail for 2 days steeped in pee and then don't wash too well.

I think the more efficient machines do use less water, do you have an extra rinse button at all (the one thing I miss about my old and decrepid washer)?

Sorry- it is wambamboos.

Am already rinsing but cant say I want to soak them if I cam help it.

Could it be because I only wash everyother day?

Aha - wambamboos I love them. I wash every other day too. I really don't soak very often. Haven't done it for several months, but I find it does help. Dd1s night nappies are horrendous sometimes.

Aha! Found that the smell was coming from the wraps not the nappy, so have started to change it more often in the day, using 3-4 rather than 2 and it has gone now.

Thanks for your help everyone! xxx
