How many wraps do you need and how often do you change them?

I'm trying to tot up costs in my head, I am planning to use reusable nappies, and would like to know, how often do you change the wraps? Every time you change the nappy? Or do they last a couple of changes?

How many wraps all together should I buy do you think? This is for a new baby.

Hi there 3rdTriMossTer. I only wash the wraps if dirty - especially when newborn. When I change dd2 (now 7 months) I put the wrap aside to dry out and then use again at the next change. They don't tend to smell for a while! I think i had about 5 wraps when she was newborn. I used bimbles and diddy diapers which i found pretty good for bf poo containment, so the wraps lasted a few changes.

Thanks for your advice schilke, sorry for the delay I had a little lie down and then it turned into a sleep!! Still I might as well get the rest while I can soon I'll be up all night every night

Keen to use reusable nappies too. Wondered what brand anyone thought the best? Obviously you put all that cash out at the start but really keen to do bit for planet. I have read about Bambino Mio and like the sound of them - any suggestions?

Pollymay most people I've asked suggested to try a few brands when lo is born and see what is best, but I wanted to have everything so I went and bought a load up front.

But they are all second-hand ("pre-loved") so it didn't cost me that much, and I plumped for tots bots the multi coloured ones because they looked the cutest.

Yes I know great buying strategy eh? But they did get good reviews on the review bit of mn, too, in all fairness!

All I have yet to buy are the wraps hence my question before, so now I am gonna buy four or five to start.

I have just changed to reusables for my 21 month old. I have 10 tots bots rainbows and 4 wacky wraps.

I think I would like to have 2 more wraps but it is manageable with just 4.

I am due in 9 days and will be using rusables fro the baby too
I would think I would need more like 20 nappies for a newborn and 8 or 10 wraps but having not done it I may be way off. but I'm thinking of all the leaky BF poop

bobsmum · 27/01/2007 17:28

I would say 4/5 wraps is plenty for any age. I had 6 for a newborn and that was loads.

I change the wraps every day unless there is a leak ( only happened about 4 times in 4 years of nappy usage!)

But I did get sucked in by cute nappy wraps and have ended up with 4 Motherease airlfow (THE best performance wise) 1 Totsbots fleece, 1 Naturebabies and 2 WeeNotions popper (best selection of patterns and prints IMO).

As a new mum to be - can you explain to me what a wrap is? Im keen on recycling etc so was pondering re -useable nappies - but dont know ANYTHING about them!! Thanks

3rdTriMossTer · 27/01/2007 18:00

Justbeme I am a new mum-to-be as well, so someone else will be able to explain it much better than me!

But my understanding is, you have the nappy itself, then you have a liner inside it to catch the poo, you can also get boosters to make it super absorbant at night time, and then, you have the wrap, which goes around the nappy itself.

Ah bobsmum it's amazing how you get sucked in by pretty nappies isn't it I love weenotions wraps too. I am keen on motherease rikki wraps with dd2 - she is rather skinny so i can do them up tight.
Sounds spot on 3rdTriMossTer. Nappy + liner + wrap with booster at night.
My only advice justbeme is to try a few different makes as you never know what will suit your baby best. i made a big mistake with ds1 (8.5 years ago ) and bought a birth to potty set before he was born. They just didn't suit his shape - ended up giving them to a friend.

Bagpuss30 · 27/01/2007 18:47

I think I only had 3 tiny newborn wraps for ds2 and then 4 mediums (from about 10-12 lbs in weight) and a fleece one for night. I managed just fine but he was a summer baby and most of the time there was a nappy load on the line drying, so I always had a clean one to hand. Now, on the other hand, I'm something of a nappy addict and have about 15 including all the wool and fleece, but I admit I am a lot lazier about getting them washed these days!

justbeme · 27/01/2007 19:00

So wheres the best place to buy all this stuff? and if I have to try different ones, I take it I can buy just one wrap at a time from different manufacturers?

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 27/01/2007 19:07

Babykind here are good, because if you try something and don't like it they will take it back and refund the cost less £3. Some local councils run a nappy trial scheme and a cashback incentive, which is worth finding out about. And ebay can be a good source of cheap new and used nappies.

I know what you mean about nappies being addictive . Oh, and sorry if I'm gatecrashing a conversation, I couldn't resist it.

justbeme · 27/01/2007 19:20

Thanks for that - I am really interested! Still a way to go yet in my pregnancy but collecting info!!

3rdTriMossTer · 27/01/2007 21:56

Justbeme how many weeks are you?

Jennster · 27/01/2007 22:42

Hi there. My dd is a year old and just gone into large wraps. I had 6 medium which was good and then lost 2 and found that difficult, but then had to send some to nursery and they only used them once and soaked them. Because of that I have 8 in this size and that is way too many. 1 wrap a day or 2 is fine (esp if alternating between 2 each change) and only use them less if there is a poo leak.

I love tots bots bamboozle nappies. I had a couple of aplix size 1s and then they brought out poppers. I bought loads of the size 2 poppers, because I am pregnant, will have 2 in nappies at once, and the size 2 poppers can be used ALMOST birth to potty from 10lb to potty. Fraid I chicken out at night and use Moltex Oko eco disposables.

Jennster · 27/01/2007 22:48

here is a nappy trial but have no experience of this particular company.

I like motherease rikki wraps too.

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 28/01/2007 10:15

I use 5 wraps with my prefolds. I used to use disposables at nigt, until thet started leaking all the time - I tentatively started using clothies at night. I've got a huggle - the ultimate 'my bum DOES look big in this' nappy, a bumble which I need to put 2 boosters in!, and some clwt twts, all of which take motherease airflow wraps (I have 3). I'm experimenting with a couple of pocket nappies as well, in the hope that I can persuade dh and gran away from the disposables.

This website here is good for new nappies and classified ads for used. I got my airflow wraps via a classified ad 2 for the pice of one new one.

justbeme · 28/01/2007 15:22

3rdTriMoster im 18weeks pregnant - so still plenty of time to read up on all this!!

Jennster · 28/01/2007 17:24

I'm 15 weeks justbeme. HOw are you feeling?

NAB3 · 28/01/2007 17:26

Each time you take off a wrap you could wipe it over with a wipe/wet flannel, leave it to dry and then use it next time therefore alternating 2 wraps through out the day.

justbeme · 28/01/2007 18:00

Feeling ok Jennster - Just off out now for dinner to some lovely pub i hope MMMMMMMM!
I shall have a look at all the links later - just when I thought I knew it all, theres something else to learn about! - wraps, liners,.... [Justbeme goes off muttering to herself!]

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 28/01/2007 18:06

Nab3, that's what I do: it works until dd poos, in which case the wrap often needs changing too. I usually wash nappies every 3 days, so sometimes I wraps get thrown in with whatever else is getting washed if it looks like I'm going to run out of wraps before a nappy load goes in.

NAB3 · 28/01/2007 18:15

Oh yes, This is assuming the wrap was only wet.

CorrieDale · 28/01/2007 18:20

If your DH will be changing nappies, then you'd better factor in him too! I can get by on 2 wraps in the day adn one at night. But DH changes the wrap every single time he changes a nappy. We have 8, and sometimes that isn't enough.

I second ME - but Airflow rather than Rikki. It doesn't matter so much for babies, but once your baby gets the knack of velcro, a poppered wrap is the only way to go.

UniSarah · 28/01/2007 19:09

We had 3 small wraps ME air flow, now have 4 mediums and have 4 Larges in waiting. I think 4 is a better number for us, 3 was a bit tight if we had a pooh explosion at the wrong point in the wash cycle. I wash wraps in with anything not just the nappy wash ( every 3rd day), mostly we use 1 wrap per day unless it gets poohy.
