Appropriate bedtime for 8 and 10 year olds in the holidays

I'm wondering what other parents do in the school holidays. I usually have a battle to get DS1 (nearly 10) and DS2 (nearly 8) to go to bed at 8.30pm, which doesn't seem that early, but they play football in the street outside and don't want to stop. In the holidays we'll probably let them stay up, and play outside until 9 pm, or even later because it is so light. But I can't help but feel that it is very late. What do others do?

If it was a beautiful sunny day prob 10 pm . Most of their friends would also be out playing too till around 9 . They soon learn to lie till to about 7/8! .

By 11 they both had an idea of when they felt tired especially after a week of late nights .

This is interesting as I am always battling my kids on this. Mine are 9 and 6 and they are normally in bed by 8. The oldest one is often still awake after 9 and I have to wake him in the morning. Except at weekends when he'll be creeping downstairs before 7am to watch TV. He swims a lot and gets tired out from training and still fights going to bed.

I wouldn't mind them staying up later if they did something other than whine about having the iPad and wanting to watch TV! If they played with toys or read I would be
more inclined to let them stay up. But we're up early anyway in the holidays because we both work so it makes no difference. They stay up later at weekends.

My 11yo goes to bed when she likes.. Home ed though so can be more flexible. She usually goes to sleep around 11-12 and gets herself up about 9-10.
Seems to be enough for her.

Wow. Some very early bedtimes!

My 7 year old is in bed by 8 and reads till 830 in term time which will stretch to 9-930 in hols or more like 11 when we're on hols.

11 year old goes up to his room around 8ish and reads till 9 in term time but he's pushing for later now. He'll go around 930-10 in the school holidays.

Both rill sleep later if we don't have anywhere to go.

My 14 and 15 year old is 9 during term time with time to read. Holidays whatever time they like as long as they are up if they need to be. Works for us.

uhoh They go up at 7.30 but lights out at 8.30. They're up at 6.20am and struggling to get out of bed in the morning.

One night a week DS1 swims until 8.45 and so that night is later (about 9.15 then lights out immediately)

No resistance whatsoever. They both love reading and like the wind down time. We also still read to them both and so we don't leave their rooms until 8ish anyway.

DS1 will be going to senior school in September and so we will adjust his bedtime slightly, partly because he'll get a lot more homework, but he loves his sleep and so I suspect he'll still be going up reasonably early compared to some of the times on here.

During the holidays we will be more relaxed since they won't need to be up so early.
