Watering down Soya Milk (night feeds 13 month old)

Dixiechick17 · 11/07/2016 23:45

My DD had just started to sleep through, then she got Chickenpox, followed by cutting a top tooth. Since she recovered she has been waking multiple times through the night and will not settle back down without milk. Scream cries until we give her a bottle. I don't know whether it's teething related (second top tooth possibly going to cut soon) or whether it's habit or comfort. I wanted to try watering down her milk during the night to see if she would lose Interest, but didn't know if it is ok to water down normal soya milk? Or if I should just assume teething and ride it out? She's a late teether, so not much experience with this.

Why are you feeding soya juice milk to your 13-month-old?

And why wouldn't it be OK to "water down" soya 'milk', which is made with water?

Sorry, I find these new nutritional trends a bit confusing. Is soya supposed to be nutritionally equivalent to milk for babies?

Dixiechick17 · 11/07/2016 23:52

My DD can't have cows milk due to being allergic. So she has alpro soya growing up milk. Sorry, I didn't know it was made with water tbh. It's not a trend, she just can't have cows milk

No, 13 months old is very young, they still need the nutrients from milk at that age!

Cow's milk is 95% water too. Ignore Cote d'Azur, she's always on threads about food banging on about the same things.

Of course you can water down soya milk, I'd start with one part water and three parts soya milk and then gradually increase the amount of water, every three nights or so.

How much milk does she have during the night? Is she getting enough food during the day?

FruitCider · 12/07/2016 10:26

Why on earth would you even suggest watering down a 13 month olds milk? My daughter is 3.5 and still drinks a pint of milk a day! Sometimes has milk in the night too!

CoteDAzur · 12/07/2016 13:20

WFT are you talking about scrumptious? And who do you think you are to say who should be able to contribute on a thread? Hmm

When was the last time you saw me on a food thread? Months ago? A year?

CoteDAzur · 12/07/2016 13:21

OP - I expressed surprise for soya milk so young, because of studies that say it is not good for young children (especially girls) to have a lot of soy, due to its oestrogen-mimicking properties. IIRC there is evidence that it can inhibit growth and cause early puberty.

Have you looked into lactose-free milk (which is not soya milk) that is adapted to the nutritional needs of older babies/toddlers?

Timetogrowup2016 · 12/07/2016 13:33

Actually it's males it's not good for (some people say )

CoteDAzur · 12/07/2016 14:21

I'm on phone so won't be able to the research for you, but there are studies with toddler girls on soya milk who have more breast tissue than normal and girls who regularly drink soya milk and start puberty significantly earlier than their peers.

Timetogrowup2016 · 12/07/2016 14:37

Fair enough I had only seen stuff about it affecting male fertility.

Also lactose free milk is not necessarily dairy free...

Anyway this isn't the ops question so I'll leave it here

Dixiechick17 · 12/07/2016 15:30

She can't have lacto free but appreciate the input. She has around 16oz of soya milk during the day plus food. Eats well. Last night she wouldn't go down without milk and in the end had three more bottles, 1 x 3oz and 2x 5oz plus the 16oz in the day. She was just having 16oz. I appreciate the input, but not all babies stay on formula post one year, she'll be 14 months in a couple of weeks. I'm not denying her nutrients or milk, online most advice is that around this age they have less than 20oz of milk a day if they are eating well. Due to the nights she is having nearly 30oz..

Cote has it wrong again re dairy/soya.
It is DAIRY that is bad for humans - numerous studies tell us this. A little bit of modern research will show you. Soya is great. The lies peddled by the dairy industry to scare us about soya are just that. Lies.

One link, but there are thousands if you look: www.onegreenplanet.org/natural-health/how-dairy-affects-your-hormones/. So, which milk has the dodgy cancer-promoting hormones and etrogen?

scrumptiouscrumpets · 12/07/2016 17:32

Exactly so redlarva. Dairy also contains growth factors linked to cancer, etc. The evidence is pretty clear. In any case, the OP clearly stated her DD is not lactose, but dairy intolerant, that's a huge difference.

Cote, I see you regularly on food threads where you love to attack anyone who has different ideas about nutrition. If you can't remember when the last time was, go through your history.

Sorry to have derailed the thread op!

KP86 · 12/07/2016 17:37

Yes, I would water down the milk if it's for comfort and you're satisfied DD gets enough food during the day.

We used to do the same with DS and cow's milk.

Don't know if it helps you, but he was intolerant to cow's milk until 13-14 months and then fine. But my niece is very allergic to dairy with not much chance of growing out of it. Fingers crossed it's the former for you.

Dixiechick17 · 12/07/2016 19:17

That's good to know KP86 :)

I think I'll wait for the tooth to cut through and if she's still doing it for comfort then I'll see if watering it down will help.

FruitCider · 12/07/2016 19:22

No, not all babies stay on formula past 1 year. They switch to full fat cows milk. Your child doesn't have that option. They need milk for a while yet! Especially with that allergy, as it will restrict their diet.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2016 19:27

A 13 month old doesn't need milk in the night though. Either water it down, give just water or drop the amount offered

FruitCider · 12/07/2016 19:28

Who says they don't? If my 3.5 yo wanted milk in the night fir comfort I certainly wouldn't say no....

dementedpixie · 12/07/2016 19:34

I said need, not want. I wouldn't give mine milk in the night. Maybe a drink of water but not milk

MonkeyBrainsInPickle · 12/07/2016 20:47

If I give organic cows milk is that better for DC re hormone thing?

RedLarvaYellowLarva · 12/07/2016 22:42

Monkey, my link upthread says not.
Dairy is really really bad for humans. Don't buy into the myth that it is. The evidence is overwhelming that we need to stop drinking it. Look up Dr.Greger of Nutrition Facts for unbiased reporting.

scrumptious - re "Cote, I see you regularly on food threads where you love to attack anyone who has different ideas about nutrition. If you can't remember when the last time was, go through your history."

I did go through my history just to see which one of us is crazy. Guess what? Out of 500+ posts since 1 May, I have exactly zero posts about food stuff. Before that, in the first 4 months of this year, I have been on two threads discussing food, both in AIBU.

In fact, since the beginning of 2016, I have exactly zero posts in the topics Food & Recipes, Weight Loss Chat, Slimming World, Calorie Counting, Allergies/Intolerances, Fasting/5:2 Diet, Low-Carb Bootcamp, and Low-Carb diets. If I have missed any food-related topics, I strongly suspect that they will not show many (if any) posts by yours truly, either.

Since you are so interested, you might also like to know that I have written the word "food" 25 times since the beginning of the year, mostly on threads that have nothing to do with diet/nutrition.

I have used the word 'soya' for the 1st time this year on this very thread. I have used the word 'dairy' only on one thread since the beginning of the year, back in March.

FYI most of my posts are in Feminism, Yoga, and Book ("What We Are Reading") topics - subjects in which you clearly have no interest in. That might be why you think I live to talk about Food.

Now, this is about when you should apologise for harassing me for no reason, although I'm not holding my breath for it. In any case, cease and desist this harassment or I will report you to MNHQ.

CoteDAzur · 12/07/2016 22:57

Sorry for the long post, OP, but I don't believe in letting people get away with lies and harassment.
