Disposables: How Often Do You Change Them?

This is really for mums of toddlers, who are using Evil (TM) Disposables. Personally, I change my DS2 when his nappy is really really heavy, or when he poos (obviously). Other mums I know feel it's necessary to change their kids every two hours or so, and that anything less is neglectful.

Am I strange? Are they strange? Is everyone strange?

It's different if you're minding other people's kids - some of the mindees might have parents who are mad for their kids being changed every two hours!

Just wondering, I notice quite a few under twos being mentioned. Do you think it goes up after they are two?
For example, my DS is pretty much on the potty now, but he drinks loads and pees a lot, compared to 6 or 7 months ago.
I reckon he would need a change more often now if he were still in nappies during the day, or there would be a good chance of leeeeaks!

I still know a fair number of children still in nappies at just turned two. My DS is one of the only ones potty trained at the toddler group I attend. I haven't really asked anyone there how many nappies they get through, but I might bring it up, now I'm curious.

hunkermunker · 25/01/2007 22:25

Er, my DS1 is older than 2.

I'd like to see you potty train him.

colditz · 25/01/2007 22:30

ds1 wasn't potty trained until 3.3. And believe me I did try.

maisiemog · 25/01/2007 22:44

Ah hah! I can ask you guys then. Do you think the number of nappies used goes up after two, for children in nappies full-time during the day I mean? [interested face]

EllieK · 25/01/2007 23:04

my ds wasn't toilet trained until 3. and by 2.5 he would just take his nappy off if he decided it needed changing that meant I never even had to think about it, just do it when he told me it needed doing

colditz · 26/01/2007 10:37

I didn't notice that they did.

scampadoodle · 26/01/2007 10:44

DS2 is 2.7, not potty-trained & until Christmas I used washable nappies. For various reasons I'm now using disposables & partly through guilt at that I change him as few times as possible - in the morning I wait until he's had a poo before I put a fresh one on (though if he doesn't poo before I take him to playgroup I obviously change him anyway) then I only change him after a poo, until bedtime when he gets a fresh one. Disposables are so absorbant these days I don't think it matters.

Just found this thread, and read NotQuiteCockney?s point on the fact that the more you wash reusables, the less environmental you are. It?s true that reusables use water and electricity, but it?s still less than the water needed to make wood into paper pulp and crude oil into plastic for each and every disposable ? even the eco ones. You are basically using and wasting much less raw material when you use cloth.

Using any nappies has environmental impact. We could all try EC !

Oh, and DS is not a tot yet, but I change him every three or so hours as it?s usually wet, plus when he poos, but he goes all night in one boosted MEOS nappy.

IdrisTheDragon · 26/01/2007 20:46

I've never changed nappies to a timetable. I have no idea how mnay DD has in a day.

Let me think, today she had

One when we got up
One before her nap
One before bed

She's 16 months. And wears reusables.

SAHMof1 · 26/01/2007 20:47

And my DS is our first, but I totally agree with the precious first born syndrome - many mums panic over anything and everything - I try not to - the last thing I want it a spoiled little darling! But I don?t think frequent changing is spoiling and anyway surely it depends on each child as well as each parent (although I could be taking rubbish, as mine?s not a tot yet!).

PinkTulips · 26/01/2007 20:48

both mine are in washables... dd is 2 and has a nappy change when she gets up... mid morning if she poos, afternoon if she doesn't and sometimes one in the afternoon but not always, and obviosly before bed. so 3/4 nappies a day

ds is 6 months and has about three changes during the day and one morning and evening, so 5 a day about.

we never have leaks or ridiculously soggy nappies and they're always changed the minute they poo so i'm not changing too little... i hope!

for ds i only have 9 day nappies which have to be ewashed and dried in between use and we manage fine
