Organic mattress/crib - worth it?

Hi
I am 33 weeks pregnant and am looking to buy a cot/crib. Both me and my husband are keen to avoid uneccessary chemicals etc and so have been looking at an IKEA Sniglar crib (and replacing the MDF board) but are thinking about getting an organic mattress as well. The advice out there is a minefield and I am confused about what make to go for, whether I still need a waterproof sheet (which comes with its own problems) and whether I am just overreacting! Had anyone please got any advice?! Many thanks!

I went organic for everything bed related as it made me feel more relaxed about other unavoidable chemicals like flame retardants in car seats etc. Once dd outgrew the snuzpod I got a little green sheep mattress and an oeko tex certified waterproof cover (from Amazon). The organic fitted sheets by glovesheets are SO NICE.

I read this book when pregnant The Cot Death Cover-up? www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0140261982/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_EuZMxbXCM6QRS and the argument (that sids is caused by a gas given off by the mould that grows on foam treated with flame retardants, so babies are most susceptible when sleeping face down on a second hand mattress) is convincing. Coir mattresses were found to present the same risk though, so you still need to be careful of letting it get moist.

Another company that appears to be selling illegal mattresses is SIMBA:
simbasleep.com/pages/faq.

I contacted them after their ad appeared on my Facebook page without me requesting it. I asked them if their mattresses comply with both sets of regulations, as their FAQ page implies they only comply with one set:

"All foam in the manufacture of our mattresses are CFC free and all components comply with UK fire regulations BS7177 Low hazard for domestic use - the most stringent in the industry’"

(It isn't the most stingent, by the way.)

I asked them specifically if their fillings comply with the Furniture Regulations and they came back to try to brow-beat me with guff about how the National Bed Federation approves their supplier and their mattresses comply with BS7177. No, in other words. I went back to quote them from the NBF which quite clearly states on their website that mattresses must also comply with the Furniture Regs. Oddly enough, they haven't replied.
