Sorry op that is possibly the nastiest thing I've ever written on here. I could have worded it more kindly.

imwithspud · 18/06/2016 16:31

How old is your baby?

DD2 was born on the 75 percentile, she's now one and is on the 9th percentile, she's absolutely fine - just petite. A drop in percentiles isn't always a cause for concern even so apple and pear puree are unlikely to make any difference, they're not exactly the most calorific foods.

BertrandRussell · 18/06/2016 16:41

My ds was born on the 99th %ile but by 6 months he was on the 50th and stayed there. I wasn't worried because he was healthy and strong, peeing and pooing and meeting milestones.

I discovered later (on here) that it's called "catch-down" growth and s quite common in big at birth babies.

I am listening I've just been busy all day. he's 5 and half months old. I'm not stupid to give it him at 3 months and I know not to give it him before 4 months so thank you for making me seem thick just because I was busy and not constantly on mn.

I've noticed the drop in weight and HV suggested it to start off with cause he doesn't seem interested in his milk no more.

and she only mentioned apples and pears for him to get use to other flavours and textures

4.5 months as recommended by the gp.

Lj8893 · 18/06/2016 22:32

Speak to your GP first. My concern is that if he is losing weight then apples and pears is not going to help him gain weight. They will fill his tummy up though, meaning he will drink even less milk and then potentially lose even more weight.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 18/06/2016 22:34

We were worried that he was losing weight and percentiles s they said to early wean and sent us to a dietician who said it was normal for a breast fed baby to dip in weight/percentiles around this stage as breast milk can't offer them all the nutrition they need at that stage [they were annoyed that the doctor had worried us for nothing] We just started on baby rice and gradually moved onto veg then fruit.

Lj8893 · 18/06/2016 22:35

Food is for fun until a year old. His main source of food should still be milk until then. There is no need to rush him with solids.

Also. When you do start him on solids, it's much easier and better for him to have actual solids/finger food rather than puréed things.

Lj8893 · 18/06/2016 22:37

I'm really surprised that a dietician would recommend baby rice!!

Itscurtainsforyou · 18/06/2016 22:41

There's no harm in introducing solids under these circumstances but it might be worth getting a referral to a paediatric dietician re the cows milk allergy. If only because they are clued up about identifying what kinds of food or milk- product substitute you should be using - more so than HVs in my experience.

NeedACleverNN · 18/06/2016 22:44

My dd was being weaned at 17 weeks. At the time I knew no better and my husband pressured me to do it "everyone else does it" he said.

I wasn't comfortable but I had no choice. He did eventually get strips torn off him for it but at the time we was going through a rough patch

Ds was nearly 8 months before he was weaning. He wasn't interested in food.

If your baby is losing weight, up his milk feed. Apples and pears are not going to do anything and baby rice may aswell not exist.

Obviously no one can stop you from weaning your own baby but in all reality purée is not going to help him gain the weight he needs.

At 5.5 months there is no real reason not to let him try bits of food but stay away from baby rice. It has no nutritional value and will fill him up without actually benefitting him at all

NeedACleverNN · 18/06/2016 22:46

Oh and my ds was not only lacto free but milk free entirely.

He was cows milk protein allergic though he seems to have outgrown it now

Turbinaria · 18/06/2016 23:16

Baby rice will up the calories and is very low allergencity which is why it's a recommended first weaning food.

unimagmative13 · 18/06/2016 23:25

5.5 months is not a problem to start.

There's no magic wand that happens at 6 months. I did baby led weaning and there's a stage of readiness, they have up be able to sit up and have good hand to mouth co ordination the occurs around 6 months. I starts just before 6 months and realistically a good time would have been just over.

I disagree that if your baby is off milk you should feed them mashed fruit. Milk is the main source of food until one, I wouldn't do anything to encourage taking less.

angelicjen · 18/06/2016 23:43

6 months.
Milk is more calorific than mushed fruit so filling him up on fruit won't help.

Feelingsolow12345 · 19/06/2016 02:14

he's already been referred to a dietitian but he'll be 7 months when he goes. another reason you why the HV recommended it.

he's getting weighed on Wednesday, if he's dropped anymore I'll go back to the doctors

5.5months when she helped herself too my sunday dinner whilst sat on my lap. Blush

unimagmative13 · 19/06/2016 17:36

I thought the worry is if they dropped 2 whole centiles??

I'm not sure why there is a worry from 75th dropping to 50th - surely that's fairly normal? I can remember what you said about milk, how many ozs a day?

Feelingsolow12345 · 19/06/2016 18:58

he's on 8oz per bottle and he has about 5-6 a day.

kit did she enjoy it?

unimagmative13 · 19/06/2016 20:02

That milk seems perfect for his age- double check the chart aswell. My friends baby had a loss and the HV had plotted it wrong on the graph

Rh1annon · 19/06/2016 21:08

Mine was at 4 months I started solids, but gave him baby rice at 3months and he loves his food he's now 9months, my hv said its fine they wouldn't recommended it at 4months if it wasn't safe ie jar, but it's up to you what is your lo like do they drink a lot of milk

Rh1annon · 19/06/2016 21:09

Just seen above post mine was like that so I would defo recommended baby rice that may help

Rh1annon · 19/06/2016 21:11

Also try baby porridge as some are From 4 months

Sparrowlegs248 · 19/06/2016 21:17

Apples and pears won't help him gain weight, and the loss he's had shouldn't be a worry. My ds started about a week before 6 months when he was sitting on my lap while I was eating a banana. He got both hands on it and pulled it to his mouth and took a bite.
