Using the loo like a big boy!

My 23 month old came back from staying with cousins at Christmas all interested in the toilet. Great! We sit him on there every day after meals and any time he wants a go.

And hoorah of hoorah on Saturday he did a poo in the loo. And then again on Sunday and Monday. Wow!

Unfortunately, on Monday we forgot to put him on the loo after meal and then he did one in his nappy. And from then on he's not performed in the right place. He tends to hold it in and then do it in his nappy immediately after he gets off the loo. Which is absolutely fine, and I don't want to put the pressure on as we're moving house in 10 days and DS2 is due in March. I really wasn't expecting to potty train for at least 6 months.

HOWEVER, I don't want to give him some kind of complex by doing the wrong thing at this point. So, do I just carry on doing what we're doing and really praise him if by some miracle the timing is right again, or do we back off using the loo altogether for a bit? What are your thoughts?

(PS I know it's been less than a week, but having had 2 days without dirty nappies, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel and I don't want to take a backward step!!!) Your help much appreciated.

He's still very young. I know some children do the potty at this age, but a lot wait until 2 and a half almost 3.

Don't worry about it and I would advise not to push it. Leave him in his nappies and try again in the springtime and when he is ready he will do it completely in 2-3 days.

I was absolutely not going to remove his nappies, but just thought that we'd see how things went for a few weeks. My plan was definitely to wait until sumer before going for the full dry days business, BUT he's "showing signs of readiness" and I don't want to screw up any progress he does make at this stage. IYSWIM.

Don't want to do anything too harsh too soon and give him a major complex, but don't want to just ignore his requests to go to the loo. Hope that clarifies the position.

Gentle bump!

Anyone else had this? I'm now concerned that he's holding onto his poo when he's on the loo and is giving himself constipation (a condition of which I have a Mortal Dread!)

For example, when he's been in his nappy and we go into the loo to change him, he quite often wants to sit on the loo as well. Do I encourage this - or do I not let him sit there, as he's already done his business?

Did you have this issue and what did you do?

Thanks for your help!

lots of them like to hold on to their poos, for some strange reasn, do it behind the sofa for insance

plus i always think leaving it til the sumer, when you are outdoors mre often, less mistakes on the carpet.. on the ther hand it depends on their age, so my dd was ready at christmas! (being 2 and a half then! )

Yeah, I think we're going to knock it on the head completely for a bit. I fed him loads of dried apricots and curry yesterday - I'd like to see him hold on to that! Anyway, if he shows interest in sitting on the loo, I'll let him, but not for too long - I'd rather he had a proper functioning bowel and live with nappies a bit longer, even though the next nappy user's arriving soon!

Roll on the summer and weeing in the paddling pool etc!

My ds1 is 23mths and in pants in the day. He generally uses the loo, today he's taken to the potty. we only have 1 or 2 accidents a day now which I feel is pretty good.

I'm sure that if I was really prepared to persevere at the moment, we could be the same, but I'm really not! Pooing is for nappies for the moment, and weeing. We'll try again in the summer!
