How the hell do I get eye ointment actually IN her eye

instead of all around it and caught on her eyelashes?

DD is 11 months and I have to do this 4 times a day, and for 3 of them DH is at work, so how do I hold her hands out of the way, stop her head whipping back and forth and apply the ointment to the inside of her lower lid?!?

Ok, now this sounds brutal but I've done it many times when ds3 had conjunctivus as a baby.

Lay her down on the floor with her head in your crutch. Put her arms under your legs....so yes you are effectively pinning her down.
You're already holding her head still between your thighs so hold her eye open and apply cream.

Sounds horrid but it does work and it's quick once you get over the guilt of pinning them down

hey that sounds good!
At the moment I am putting her on the sofa and then kneeling in front of it and leaning over her so her arms are trapped so that would be nothing new!
At risk of sounding dim, how do you mean under your legs, surely you would be squishing them under your knees then?

Congrats on the baby by the way, I am still a bit new so havent posted that elsewhere but I noticed you were getting a bit impatient!

I tried the pinning down thing and it never worked for me! Instead, we had to try and stop her wiggling just long enough to drop the stuff onto her eyes which are always closed. The shock of the drop onto her eye, normally makes her open her eyes, letting it all in. There's no guarantee it'll all get in but there is a chance

well, she'd be laying flat on her back, as if she's looking at the ceiling.
Hold her arms under your legs as you sit on the floor....does that make sense??

I do the ladytophamhatt

sat on the floor legs apart
Child/baby on floor with head between legs
Arms under legs
(watch out for particularly long legs kicking you in the head....yes I tried it with a 9yo )

I do what LTH does, but I also asked for the c reme to be swapped to drops as they are 1000 times easier to administer.

evamum · 17/01/2007 22:05

Shall give that a go tomorrow and let you know how it goes!

When I picked up the prescription I was horrified when they said it was an ointment and not drops, and the 'helpful' man said I only need to get a quarter inch of it in her eye so it shouldn't be that hard....

We do it when they're asleep.

Oh, just read it has to be inside of lower lid...

um, if she was asleep at least you would have the advantage of a surrise attack

Whizzz · 17/01/2007 22:10

I think we tried putting it in the inside corner & then watch as they rub their eye - thereby spreading it to where its supposed to go. Still not nice though

Flower3554 · 17/01/2007 22:26

Warning... not for the sqeamish

We had a 15 month old who had had her eye removed due to a tumour and we had to apply cream 3 times daily to the inside of the socket.

I have to say the only way we managed this was the total swaddling route.

Getting the artificial eye in and out, now that was a problem

evamum · 17/01/2007 22:45

Flower, well that kinda puts it into persepctive!
